Hi there I'm having this same problem -- I have been working on a file with materials downloaded from Chaos Cosmos, I have then renamed those materials and started editing them. I then save the Rhino File and exit. When I reopen the rhino file, the materials are switched to Rhino Materials (no longer vray materials, with the same names). I switch them back to Vray materials, and the colors are all black and the edits that I have made are all gone. I'm hoping this is an issue that has been resolved since this is quite an old post at this point! Please let me know -- thanks.

I have the latest Rhino 7 and the Latest Vray 5

Hello. For a long time I have had problems with materials that disappear from time to time, all in a similar way to others. Let me add that I have the latest version of V-ray and Rhino. I create scenes from scratch using only v-ray and cosmos materials. Recently, it is enough to restart the computer and all the materials from the file on which I work disappear in the V-ray table, when you hover over the model, the material appears as "custom", after converting them to v-ray material, they appear in the v-ray table back, but duplicated , sometimes they are correctly reproduced, sometimes they are black. I can play most of the stuff like this, but sometimes it only works until the next file I'm working on is opened. You can have fun over and over again from time to time. The problems started with v-ray Next and are repeated in the latest version (earlier versions did not have this problem). I do not know how to fix it and I can see that others also have a similar problem, not to mention the message "disconnected materials" appearing from time to time. I am asking for help because I waste a lot of time and money constantly restoring and re-creating materials in scenes. This is very annoying.

Has anyone come up with a solution for this? I've had this happen to 3 projects now using the latest rhino 7 and Vray. I've been using rhino and vray for a long time now and this is an infuriating bug. I've just lost about a weeks worth of work and this is killing my business.
I've tried rolling back vray versions but it doesnt work. I will finish up a project with 50-100 materials containing around 750+maps then when I open again it asks if I want to add a material as there is none. I have submitted a couple of enquires with Chaos help and waiting for a response

            Hi matthew_west,

Here are a couple of questions that will help us determine what's going on:
Have you moved the file to another computer?
Have you moved the textures at all?
Is there anything special about the objects with missing materials? Are they from the Cosmos library and have they been merged?
What does the File Path Editor say when you open it? (File Path Editor)
Have you edited the file without V-Ray being active?

Also if you can share the project before the textures disappeared, that would also help.

            Regards,
            Konstantin

              Hi,

yesterday, after using Vray for Rhino for a few months I encountered the same problem. Worked on a file for a few weeks, last saved on friday. No problems whatsoever, one of the last actions on friday was a render.
Monday morning, when I first opened the file, it seemed fine, when clicking render the Vray VFB opened for a few seconds, the moment that the precalculations were over, the VFB and Rhino just dissapeared from screen (no error message, just closed). This has never happened to me on any file.

After a few more attempts of rendering (I did not save the file, the date still shows it was last saved on friday), I restarted the computer (it was not restaretd between friday and monday), after which the file started to take forever to open (20 - 30 minutes). After it finaly did open, it was impossible to handle - selecting any object, moving in any view, ... resulted in freezing the program (waited more than an hour in some tries, but program was still "not responding" in task manager).
I wanted to check if there is anything to adjust to help resolve the obviously problematic render, I noticed that there were no materials in the vray asset editor window. All of the materials were "Rhino custom".
I tried opening the 3dmbak file (also from last friday), but the result was the same. I tried installing Vray 5 (instead of the beta 6 that the file was created in), but there is no difference.

All of the objects were drawn directly in Rhino (not imported). Some materials used were standard Rhino (paint, plaster ans picture), majority materials were Vray (most from the included library, one or two from Cosmos).
I am using Vray 6 beta in Rhino 6.

I can send you the affected file (wetransfer as it is quite large), if it would help with diagnostic what went wrong. I lost a whole day trying to recover the file, figuring out what causes the problem and finally recreating all of the assets, this time as standard Rhino materials.

                Hello, Matej,

We are currently reevaluating all info gathered so far from reports on this matter and have raised the priority of this issue in our bug tracking system.
For the time being we have not yet identified the cause of this problem although we have a couple of theories as to why it may happen. Our dev team have introduced several improvements to safeguard such options (latest one being in the Sep 13th v6 beta build).
Nevertheless, while the number of reports is very small, we agree that the nature of the issue is severe.
I am currently brute-force testing one likely scenario to reproduce the problem. Our dev lead is also in communication with McNeel regarding the issue.
I hope to have an update for you in the next few days!

In the meantime, could you please share with us the version of your scene affected by this problem or any version of the file which still exhibits the 20-30 minutes load time issue?
You can send over a WeTransfer link, accompanied by a link to this forum thread via https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Additionally, any detail you can recall about your actions during your last Rhino session prior to encountering the problem would be very helpful!
Have you copy & pasted items from other projects (included materials)? Did your work involve material assignments, worksessions or block imports prior to rendering (and the subsequent crash)?
Do you use any 3rd-party plugins beside V-Ray?

Last but not least, what options have you set for the following Rhino commands?
                RenderPasteConflictOption
                RenderImportConflictOption

                Kind regards,
                Peter

Just wanted to add that I am experiencing this same issue of V-ray materials switching to Rhino Materials after closing and re-opening a file very regularly.

Very concerning to hear it is stil lhappening even in the latest V-ray releases as I have been searching for a solution and tried 3 different builds of the software yet the problem still persist.
It makes using the software alongside Rhino very inconsistent and frustratignly risky.

As currently the warning that flags up when a file is open that there is duplicated materials doesnt actually solve the problem - it mostly just allerts you to the fact it has happened.

Hoping the solution is implemented soon.

                    Dear deyan_saev, hello.

Could you please refer to the last information shared here.
Very important for us will be to define the exact Rhino version and to confirm that your way of work is aligned to the recommended practices shared in the created docs.

                    Best regards,

Currently using V-ray 5.20.06 (Vray Core 5.20.24) with Rhino 7.24.22

I changed the V-ray built from the 5.20.01 to 5.20.02 to 5.20.06 all with the aim of preventing this issue without any luck.
( as it regularly happens on my scenes and makes working consistently on projects a lot more difficult and time consuming)

Will try the latest version (V-ray 6 Hotfix 1) with the hope the problem doesnt appear there as well and report back for the record.

Just wanted to report the problem of V-ray materials converting to Rhino ones upon closing the file still happens in version 6.0021.
Also using the latest Rhino Version as recommended in the other post (7.24.22308.15001)

While V-ray can recognise there has been orphaned materials and preserve the original ones I am having to re-apply all the V-ray materials to the objects or layers.
This is very time consuming for larger scenes

I suspect it is happening when the internet drops out while saving a file, creating the issue.

Some helpful pointers here on how to make sure files "open" in trying to prevent the problem from occuring but still happens in my case.
                        https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/a...rials-in-Rhino

Appreciate the team is working on this. - just frustrating it happens at all - as when a file has to be regularly saved to preserve progress it icreases the cnahces of "saving " while V-ray is momentairly not online due to poor internet connection for example.

                        Thanks

                          Hi deyan_saev,

The observation about internet is interesting. We have discussed similar situations, there is a way to test this suspected reason by borrowing your licenses.
We could share advices how to do it if it's suitable for your workflow, example here.
Very helpful will be to think about the following:
                          • when it's happening - is there a hybernation/restart of the PC before re-opening the file
                          • last actions - are you copy/pasting assets from scenes which could be already corrupted (similar complaint in previous versions)
                          • how often it is happening - we could arrange a remote session if we could predict the behavior (that's why point 1 is important to be cleared out)
                          Waiting for your answer.

                            Hi,

Thank you vey much for continuing to look in to this issue. I am following up on this as I encountered this problem again today.

(And it has happened few times ofer the last couple of months unofrtunatly even after trying the suggested workflows)

                            - There was no hybernation or restart of the PC
                            - I wasn't copying and pasting object in to the file
                            - This is happening on almost all projects I work on. So every 2 to 3 days. (Or daily if I work longer on a single project)

I have submitted the form alongside the project files to the location specified by the Chaos team
(Is it best to send files with packed Chaos Cosmos assets or without?)

The strange part is that there is no warning of the issue as it occurs.
At the start of a file everything is working fine, v-ray is rendering images , materials look normal and as I work on a project for a couple of hours I save new versions (following all the steps outlined by the team in the forum to try and avoid this issue)

Then, when it's time to close the file is when things go wrong. I even make sure V-ray is working correctly before saving the file. I am online and I have enabled borrowing the license from the license server.

When I go back to open it (even without turning the PC off or doing anything) I get the warning of "Orphaned materials". I go back to previous saves of the file to try and recover from an earlier point , but almost all of the previous saves have the same issue
(even though they all worked fine as I was creating them and did not come up to any issues)

                            Any advice is much appreciated.
Is it worth trying Rhino 8 in the hopes this does not occure there (even though Rhino 8 is still WIP version which is why I have avoided it) . Currently my V-ray Version is 6.00.01 and Rhino is 7.24.22308.15001 (as that was last noted for not having this problem)

Some updates from my end, some of which positive
( but not sure if the problem is resolved or just haven't experienced it again yet.)

Since the last project in which I encountered the disconnected/ orphaned materials issue described above I have update Rhino to 7.29.23107.3001 and V-ray to 6.00.03

Interestingly, when I tried to open a file that was previously showing up with disconnected materials now opens up fine and all the materials still show as V-ray materials
(So the file was fine to begin with and its upon opening it that materials get scrambled ? )

My guess is that whatever the issue is , is being caused at the very start of opening the file. ( I was openning files after loading Rhino and V-ray so still dont know why materials were being changed/ disconnected before)

I will continue to look out for this and follow the recomended workflow for avoiding the issue and fingers crossed it doesn't show up again.

                              Many Thanks,

                                Hi deyan_saev,

Thank you for the detailed report.
In addition to all shared recommendations before, we have encountered higher risk if you use File > Recent to open the file.
New changes regarding this are implemented and will be part of the upcoming update.

Could you please confirm are you using this kind of option to open your files?
