  • Weird crashes

    Hi all,

I've been working on my latest scene in Rhino with Vray, and every time I start up my computer and load up my rhino file and start rendering, after computing light cache, everything crashes. If I use override materials it does not crash.
Now, to check if it is the geometry or too big textures, I have concluded that it is neither. My textures are all pretty small (not bigger than 1000px jpegs).
I have started deleting objects from my scene group by group, but it seemed like it would crash just randomly.

Then, one of the weirdest ways of fixing this I found is this: I save the file under some other filename (make a copy) and delete the whole bunch of objects, layers and some materials, just so the render will start. When it actually starts to render, I can safely go back and open up my original filename (where I haven't deleted or edited anything) and render without the problem After that rendering works all the time until I exit Rhino and open again. Then the whole thing starts again.

What is the deal with that???

    Re: Weird crashes

One thing that happens to me, is when I create my Materials and save in PS the image, I forget to save in RGB because in CMYK the render crash instantly.

So other thing coulb be too many poly geometry, try to use when you have a big scene or many objects, mesh. Hide curves too.

    Hope this helps ??? :-\

      Re: Weird crashes

definitely double check all images - they must be RGB. occasionally non-RGB images WON'T crash v-ray, which may account for your ability to sometimes get a render.

        Re: Weird crashes

thanx for the suggestion, I've checked all the images, and all of them are RGB, I'm not even sure how would it be possible to just accidentaly the texture was CMYK?
        Any other suggestion?

It really doesn't seem like there is something wrong with any part of the scene or material. I have also tried meshing everything, with no luck.
Hate to say it again, but the scenario I am making it render in is really 100% successful, so really I never end up changing my scene (it stays the same way as it was when the render was crashing). After that if I don't close my Rhino, I can render without the problem often 30-50 images per session without a hiccup. Wouldn't that guarantee that the scene wasn't responsible for that?

          Re: Weird crashes

I understand your worry smasher, it's really weird... I have that crashes too sometimes, and I don´t no why...just start it in the begin...

I don't no if you have to mutch time to this, but try to copy object by object to other new window of rhino and render always that you copy somthing new in the scene... :-\

Did you have a large file?

          best,

Also we don't support "progressive jpg" you have to double check this too.

              Re: Weird crashes

thnx fernando, is there a list of jpg options vray supports or recommends? I'm checking and resaving all my maps into RGB 8 bit JPEG with Baseline Standard option.
Is ICC Profile: sRGB IEC61966-2.1 something I should use or not use, or it doesn't matter?

              p.s.
I have been testing with deleting objects with none luck, but, if I open my file and just save AS to the same file, it will render. So, absolutly no deleting geometry is needed.

              p.p.s.
Ok, now it works flawlessly, I guess the Baseline Optimized isn't supported like Progressive? Because some maps were Baseline Optimized, but after resaving them all into Baseline Standard it all worked.

Anyway, thank you all for your suggestions. I would never think of jpg options to look into, specifications support like these should be available to read on the site. Am I missing it somewhere?

                Re: Weird crashes

Thank you ever so much for this post. This could explain many of the much too frequent crashes I experience. Including the one I just posted about in the 'general' forum.

I just performed a test after modifying the bitmaps - and it worked !!!
