  • Assigning Materials

I'm frustrated with how I have to assign a material using Vray. For example, I select all my objects and assign the material "Default Material" to them all using "browse".

I then select grouped objects and assign "Default Material 0" using the browse button. I then rename the material "white glow".

Now, all my objects end up "white glow". So, i wanted to start from scratch and assign everything with the "default material". It didn't work.

I read the thread on linked materials hoping this would help me. It only confused me more.

IMO, the material editor, the choice between copied and instanced materials is confusing. I should be able create a material and assign it to the selected obect and it should be just that simple.

So, how do I simply assign all objects a white diffuse, then assign a group of selected objects a different material?

    Assigning Materials

On this subject, I'm finding I can't delete copied materials. In my experimenting, I created 3 white glows using the copy method.

    1) There is no visual confirmation of what is happening and only add's copied materials to a list of default materials.

    2) I can't go back and assign the "default material" because it shows up on the properties window as "white glow". Which is a result of me renaming a material and apparently it being linked.

Yes if you keep copying a material then you are creating a new copy of it each time.

When you apply one material to a bunch of objects - editing the material on one object will change all of the other materials. Is this the behavior that is throwing you off? They all literally share the same material when you do this. Do you think it makes more sense just having each object with its own copy by default?

If you don't want to share a material then you want a Copy. If you want them all to literallly share the same material, meaning changes to it for one material changes it for all others, then you want to Instance it.

When you use the "Browse" button at this time it always instances. So if you have applied every material with a White Diffuse and now you want to apply a subgroup with a different material you should select your group and then hit "Create" to make a new material for all of them.

I think this has been my problem. I will give it a try and see if things work better for me.

Ok, feel free to post any more observations or opinions on this stuff. I want the material creation to be as "common-sense"- oriented as possible.

            Broozee,

There is also a feature in the V-Ray Render Options>Global Switches Rollout it's called Override Materials. If you enable this you can set a simple diffuse material to the entire scene. All you have to do is adjust the RGB color to your desired look and feel.

              Hi Corey,

Thank you for this. I discovered this reading the tutorials and it works great. This will be a good work around until I get use to the material editor.
