Our documentation right now is under development. If you could explain to me what exactly your trying to accomplish I can probably point you in the right direction.

I'll give a quick once-over for you though. To get to material settings select the object(s) and go to object properties (F3). Move the combo box to material and put the radio button on "Plug-in". Hit "Create" and that should pop up our material editor.

The bottom left is a tree control that shows all the different layers that are currently in your material. There are 4 different types of layer. Emissive materials create light (GI must be enabled to see it). The other layers are Reflection, Diffuse, and Refraction. As a default all materials just start with a diffuse layer with grey color.

To add layers select the layer type in that tree control and right-click. This should pop-up a menu with a single entry "Add new layer". After you click on that you should see in the right window that there is a new panel signifying whichever layer you just added.

I'm sorry if this is too remedial for you, but I'm not sure what the exact material your going for is, feel free to ask for further examples or help

I circled the material workspace ( where you can add layers and do various operations by right-clicking on the different things contained in it. Right-clicking on your material name (DefaultMaterial in the picture) pops up a menu with various operations for our materials (saving loading appending ,etc). Under the material name are the four different types of layer as I previously discussed. Right-clicking on any of them will have another pop-up menu for layer type operations.
