    hy all,
    I'm trying to do object with translucent effects. I can't understand what are the starting parameter to set.
    Traslucency is under Refraction, ok, but have I to set always a trasparent material?
    And the thickness parameter why I have to set to 50.000 to see some effects?Is'nt in real world units? what is the meaning of this parameters?

    sorry for bothering you I' m newer and I want learn more.

    If I understand you correctly, you need to use the 'fog' function. Have a look at the lower section of this tutorial (it talks about 'fog' usage).

        make sure you use a glossiness other than 1.0 or it won't work. Also use fog and turn off double sided. Then you also need a scene where the translucency will be visible. A simple skylight lighting isn't ideal... Try to backlight your objects.

          Wouter, in your web site tutorial is a diffuse layer used for the SSS material, but in my tests here, a diffuse layer kill the sss effect. Any suggestion?

            Yeah you need to use a diffuse, but also you need to lighten up the transparency control next to the diffuse. So you get a mix between diffuse color and the refraction layer (translucency).

            For example plastics will need much diffuse, less refractive layer. But juice for example will need less diffuse layer and more refractive layer.

                Is it possible to use the SSS effect on single surfaces? Like a sheet paper - no polysurface, only a surface.

                  No because then it will look like an infinite thick piece of paper. Like when you use a glass material on a single surface. Maybe you can simply fake it with a diffuse color and a mid grey for the transparency slot next to it. The scattering inside the paper doesn't matter anyway. Or maybe with an ior of 1.0, haven't tried it

                    There is a V-Ray shader that we will investigating to implement for the next release that will allow for this.
