    Re: Link please

    Check the bottom of the page. He did release another version of it, so I think that post with the updated link is down. I downloaded it yesterday, so its definitely there.

      Re: Link please

      i feel a bit stupid for asking, but what does this tool do? What is an EXR image and what is it good for?

        Re: Link please

        Well there are 2 things here; the VRimg and the EXR. The VRimg is an format which does several things. First and most importantly it writes the file as each bucket finishes calculating, and what this does is help manage memory usage when rendering large resolution files. Second thing is that it retains every piece of information that is calculated by vray, so that means that is has all of the accurate color info and all of the render channels. Because of all this the VRimg format is not for everyday use, but for large resolution renderings that will use allot of memory it is very useful.

        An exr is simply a image format that has the ability to retain 32bit/channel images. This means that it will have the colors if float values. Exrs are one of the better high dynamic range file formats as they are widely supported and not as large as hdrs.

        The converter is simply an application that will convert the info in the vrimg file to exrs, but you can simply convert rgbA or other channels. There is no application that can natively read Vrimgs and no plugins that will allow for an application to read them. Hence the need to convert.

              Re: Link please

              I will add that I updated the Large Resolution tutorial yesterday. The link to the current GUI version was posted there.

              I have not tested the GUI version in some time. But it requires a certain vrimg3exr.exe. I am not 100% the version we ship is supported by this GUI plugin.

                @drybarr

                No Problem. Its a bit out there if you haven't been exposed to it. The different formats for high dynamic range images only really matter if you work within that realm allot (ie compositing in Nuke, Shake, Combustion or AE) unless you do that having a float point image doesn't really matter too much other than tweeking exposure values. Now if printers start being able to accurately represent those colors, or high dynamic range monitors become more widely used, then I can see much more of an everyday need for it, but at this point, for me at least, its just a way to preserve data, not really work with it.
