  • How to use Vismat Converter?

    Hello,

I'm not sure if that's the right forum, but I'd ask anyway:

How do I use the *.mat to *.vismat converter?

I installed the plug-in, it is listed in the Plugins Manager in AutoDesk 9, But I can't find how to convert those materials files. I'm Stuck with thousands of Max materials.

Anyone? I would appreciate any comment.

    Thanks!

    hello Truthdefined!
    1. You need create or load vray mat.
    2. Then attach this mat with any objects and right click on object you can see "create vismat..."
    3. You can see dialog "mat>>vismat"
    or Autodesk\3ds Max 9\Scripts\Startup\VMatEx\readme.txt - mini-tutorial

Re: How to use Vismat Converter?

There are some unsupported Max/V-Ray for Max elements that may be the root of the issue. Almost any of the procedurals we don't really import, I'm not sure which, but even if we did its only one or two. The other thing is that you may want to go and make sure that the converter is loaded up as a start up script in Max. Reread through the ReadMe file as it gives a full explanation of how to get it fully hooked up. If you can post a few more specifics as far as if no materials export, only some of them, or things like your max setup that might be more helpful if the problem persists.

It doesn't work for me either. Even a simple vray material with red diffuse color. I can export it, but when I want to import it into rhino it always says it is an invalid asgvis file.

At least If we have some imput from ASGVIS will be good, can someone explain from the admins more details about the converter, I have problem convert this file and does not work. Can someone from the ADMINS address this issue for all, thanks...It would be great if they ad this material for all in the download area.

Re: How to use Vismat Converter?

the link you posted is broken, but that doesn't matter. You can't convert .mat files to .vismat files without having 3D Studio Max installed, and our converter utility (which barely does anything). You're better off loading that .mat in to 3D Studio Max, writing down all of the settings, and then making it from scratch in V-Ray for SketchUp or V-Ray for Rhino, or our material studio. I've addressed this question a few times, I hope I've been clear this time.

                    dear thuthdefined...
i can understand your pain.. thousands of max materials seems a lot..anyhow u would still need 3dstudio max to read all these materials, and a lot of paper and ink to note the settings
                    regards

Re: How to use Vismat Converter?

we should have a platform here in asgivs forum, where users can upload their vismat materials (for free and share them for free).. this can be like the 'image gallery' section we currently have..
use of vismat is growing, and why not have a sharing platform for it... (and occasional contests for best materials..!)
of course keeping a check on the copyright issues while using shared textures/ references etc..
(i dont know if this is the appropriate section of the forum to post this.. )

We've toyed with the idea of a more robust material section for a bit, but we haven't found a solution we like yet.

Re: How to use Vismat Converter?

                            Hello !

I've installed 3DS 9, Vray 1.5 R3, and the vismat converter on my computer.
                            Everything is alright.

I've a lot of archmodels found on evermotion, which are made for 3DS (.max) and Vray. I convert those objects into ".3ds" to import them in rhino. But materials are not conserved. I've got the solution : i open the file with 3DSmax, i export in ".3ds" and convert the material with vismat, to import everything into rhino (first, import the file ".3ds", and then, import the material converted with the material editor in rhino).
But, vismat doesnt work: I open the 3D model on 3DS max. Then, right click, and "Create Vismat from selected". Then, "Start exporting", but there is an error in progress:

                            "Material: Mat1 skipped, unsupported.
This utility currently only converts VRayMtlMaterials
                            All exporting jobs completed"

The fact is, that material is a Vray Mtl ! I see that in the Material Editor of 3DSmax.

Please excuse my bad english level, and thanks you for your answers !

why don't you just write down the parameters of the material in a piece of paper or a text file, and in Rhino try to recreate the material? that way you avoid any error on screen.

also aren't OBJ files better than 3ds file extension? im just saying.....
