  • Stronger Shadow

    Hi guys,

i need to make stronger shadows (more contrast / darker shadows)in my renderings using a studio setup (no sun)

I have a white reflective floor (IOR 2) with a white block hovering just above the floor (as an example...) but the shadows are very light grey. I also need shadows that are blurry and not sharp.

In your manual it says the following on page 23 "If you want to have a stronger shadow, we do not recommend you set the intensity way high and
make the light size really small. It's better to use a different light type in V-Ray. Please see dialogue box of how to create a Parallel Light later.".....

This never gets explained (later on in the manual)as stated and i cant seem to find parallel lights in Rhino.

What would be the best way to get stronger shadows using white reflective materials??

Here is the image and the settings (there is an HDRI map on the background slot)

    Re: Stronger Shadow

i always use rectangular lights. You make them large to get an even lighting effect, but then there is no shadow. When you make them small you get a bright patch on your product.

All my subdivs on the lights are 32

    Still not working for me...mmmm

Try to use directional light, those are parallel lights, where light rays are parallel just as sun rays.

the image that i used in the URL uses a directional light. I dont have a problem with casting shadows....they are just not intense enough

Did you try turning down your environment GI? Try turning it off first, you should get almost black shadows.

yeah, tried that...then the white gets to grey. and there is to much of a white patch on the product

              Re: Stronger Shadow

What you actually may want to work with is the gamma value of the image. Gamma affects how midtones are displayed. By default they are corrected for your monitor, which means that the shadows will be lighter. Change the Gamma Value from 2.2 to 1 and disable Affect RGB and Affect LDR textures. That should help you.
