  • Advanced mapping of complex surface

    Hello All

I have a little coffee-table I designed that I'd like to make a rendering of. The problem is that the top surface is a relatively complex curve and it's supposed to be a wood veneer which would make it very uniform. Unfortunately it's seems to be stretching around the legs(see attached images)

You should also know that the curve is not actually a single surface but a couple of surfaces joined together.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Easy method: box mapping (not perfect).
The other way could be, to texture the table top with one mapping and try to get a single surface for each leg surfaces and use standard surface mapping.

You might want to rotate the widget 45 degrees so that the legs aren't on the corner of the widget...The corners are really messed up with the mapping right now.

Ultimately I think the way to get the best mapping is to have the top and legs be all one surface that has the corners bent down and is trimmed with the shape you want. That way surface mapping will work fine, its just a matter of building the surface in the right way.

Yeah, this would be another example of what I was asking about yesterday. OOOh....How about a transformable mapping option? One that could employ transformations such as flow, taper, or even array?...hmm.

Re: Advanced mapping of complex surface

          Hi

Sorry was away for a few days. I don't think it's possible for me to change the surface since I modelled it in solidEdge. box mapping looks terrible by the way because the mapping goes perpendicular when it gets to the legs.

I was thinking that since what seems to be happening is that the material gets stretched when it comes to the legs perhaps the best approach is to modify the bitmap to be more "compressed" around the edges? but I need a really high res bitmap of a wood veneer to pull that off... anyone have one by any chance?

Actually, yeah, if you go to formica.com, their wood samples are pretty good. There is also alway morguefile.com; they have free textures zipped at super high res.

AS for your mapping problem. I think I might have come up with an idea for you. You could build the map in one file that looks like this:

And then break the map apart as seperate files and then give each leg a planar mapping channel and then just realign the files as they were when you first built it?...just a thought.

yes that's kinda what I had in mind but I think your approach may yield better results... will post the results here when I get a chance to do it(busy busy busy)
