  • Toon Material

    This is my first attempt using the new Toon material. Compared to another program I use, the outlines here don't seem to be as smooth and crisp - perhaps my eyes are tired?

    It could be I haven't perfected the settings. Regardless, I really do like the material.

    Hi Bill, I used the other program for outlines too - interesting for me was to see, that Vray render outlines at reflections and with DOF.

      Hi Micha!

      I wonder what program that is : - I was very surprised to see outlines in reflections; like that feature very much. Even more so, the opportunity to turn toon lines off in reflections.

        You might try making the lines a little thicker, then enabling Silhouettes and playing around with the multiplier. This will make the lines around the object pop out a little more.

          I have to say after playing with vray toon for 5 minutes the results are already way more impressive than that other program. The silhouette looks so much better than anything I was ever able to achieve with that other one. Of course now I will have to figure out the entirely new way of making toon materials and figure out how they can fit into my workflow. But I am very excited by this new feature.

            Hi Dalomar - I tried your suggestion. It works and the multiplier is an interesting feature however, there are still inconsistent line thicknesses. I'm not sure if this is how the material is supposed to work or not. I'm not complaining, the Toon material rocks. I guess I was just expecting the line thickness to be consistent.

            Perhaps it's a result of how an object is modeled? It's still a great addition to Vray and if I were to have a wish, it would be to clean up the line quality around objects.

              I think what your running into billy is where two objects meet...this tends to be the hardest condition to really work out because the algorithm works on which object is closest. When they are right on top of each other, things get a little more unstable. I've found that remeshing with finer settings helps out in some cases.

                I think I'm a little bit lost. We have toon feature in Vray for Rhino already? If yes, how to do it?

                    Its an extra material, so you'll just need to add a toon material and then select a base material. For some extra info check out Spot 3d

                        It'd be cool if the lines came in on a separate layer...layers in vray? *happy chills*!
                        A lot of times, we have the graphic design department map on graphics in photoshop just for quick revisions. Perhaps this is something to discuss?

                          At this point, this is limited because the Toon affect is applied at a material level. In the future, we're going to try and move it towards and atmospheric effect, which would allow it to be separated.

                            Today I render an interior concept for a client. He like to get toon outlines and approx. 20 materials/colors. For this kind of rendering the current toon implementation isn't the best. I'm curious for the "atmospheric" outlines.

                              The switch over to toon lines as an atmospheric (if it even happens) most likely won't make that much of a practical difference, so there really isn't much to be curious about. Same options, same look, just applied in a slightly different manner. It may help some setups be a little more unified, but not really much more than that. The motivations for making the switch are more technically based than anything else.
