  • Me or is displacement slow?

    Hi guys,

I am trying out displacement in Vray, and for now it is extremely slow, now I don't have much experience with displacement, but I went with the same pattern to Modo and it was MUCH faster to render.

unfortunately I can't show you guys what I am doing, but its a flowery pattern put on a door object.

Is the slowness to be expected or are there some hints or tricks you can share.

    thanks for the help.

Re: Me or is displacement slow?

V-Ray displacement works much much differently than the displacement within other programs. V-Ray calculates its mesh dynamically, and then loads it on the fly whenever it needs it. The reason V-Ray does this is that displaced meshes have the tendency to create an extremely large number of polygons, which has the tendency to crash. By having the ability to load displacement on the fly, the memory needed for displacement is kept under control. The downfall to this system is that there is a bit of time spent "swapping" the mesh back and forth between memory and the hard disc.

In addition to this, the mesh will take some time to calculate, and raytracing (which is at the backbone of almost every V-Ray calculation) will take longer with more polygons.

Could it be possible to switch to a precalulated displacement? If Rhino 64Bit is ready, than RAM shouldn't be a big problem anymore and some times the displacement could keeped simple.

No. V-Ray does not support this...you could use the RDK displacement though. This will actually be supported in the next version so you won't have to extract the mesh.

OK, thanks. I'm curious for the next release. If there is abig jump from v1 to v2, it could be nice to install both versions, v1 for working and v2 for testing.

At this point, I am not sure whether both versions will be able to be installed concurrently, but I am pushing towards that.

My hope is that there is as big a jump as we can manage from v1 to v2. Between Proxies, Material additions, and UI changes I think we're setting the bar pretty high. We'll see however how things go with this.

I asked the question at the chaosgroup forum too:

Damien, could 2D Displacement a solution?
