  • IES lights - general question

    Hi guys, firstable the new forum vision is cool Now the question is - i've make a interior scene, and i wanna put some IES lights inside. The problem is that my model is very small, and the lights are very strong. When i try to scale my model 20 times, the lights are ok but vray gives me that message - scene bounding box is too large, possible raycast errors. So, is there a way to control intensity of IES lights (in Max theres that option) :-\ without need of scaling :

    Why not adjust your exposure?
    Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

      Global scene light is not a problem :P My problem is how to control IES lights intensity individually :

        Re: IES lights - general question

        Currently there is no way to adjust the intensity of IES lights. The partial reason for this is that IES lights have specific light intensity and therefore should not necessarily be changed. This will hopefully change in the future, but that is the current behavior. It is recommended to use the physical camera and adjust the exposure to compensate for any differences in the intensity of the illumination.

        There are other tricks, such as scaling a scene to get the right intensity. If you have a "small" scene and scaling it generates that message, then something probably got scaled really big or something. I'd check and see if there's an object very far from the origin. As a general note though, that message isn't too much of an issue though as most objects won't lie outside that raycasting area.

          VfR already got IES lights?

            Yes, although technically its not a finished feature.

              :-[ too bad, that means the only way is scaling despite error messages :-\ Thanks guys

                Today I needed an IES light, but the missing intensity control is a pain ... but I found a workaround. The IES generator from Andrei Kozlov allow to load IES files and edit them. So, the original light pattern maybe destroyed a little bit, but the intensity can be adjusted by editing the curves.

                Or doe's somebody know an other way, there can be changed the intensity without IES curve edit?

                  ... some hours later: the IES generator works good, the renderings are much better looking than per default rhino spots. Attached a screenshot of the generator v3 (v4 is totaly different, v3 works better for me)

                    Re: IES lights - general question

                    Last I remember we were waiting on Vlado for this. Joe tried to hook multiplying by a color brighter than white, but that did not do it. There are a number of things about lights that I'd like to take a look at once we get past some of the major feature development for VfR2, so that's likely the time that this will get resolved.

                      I've tryed this before post that topic, but i did'nt like final results. Even i ask Candellero for that, but he works with Max :-\ and he couldn't help me. I really hope that the next VFR will supports intencity control. By then, i'm still use model scaling. It proves that the message - scene bounding box is too large......... appears when i'm using a large picture frame like a environmental background. When i remove the picture frame, the message disappears ;D

                        Hello,

                        pardon me, did i miss something? How do you do IES lights in Rhino?! I guess you are not talking about Michas "fake" IES lights ...
                        Is there a hidden command or something ? Please enlight me

                        thank you for any feedback

                          @Vcube
                          Its not hidden, but its not "flaunted" either. Type visIESLight and that will work for you.

                          @Alexander
                          In most situations you can ignore that error. It does cause some issues, but most of the time they are negligible.

                            Ok Guys, I've been usign IES for quite a while now, I can get wondeful effects with them, but I'm still missing the controls. Now we have Affect Specular and diffuse, but why botherin in placing a multiplier if its gonna be inactive???? Is that a teaser for forecoming versions of VfR??? Or am I doing sth wrong here?

                            Please help me so I can use the multiplier

                              Hi Diego
                              The "visieslight" is not a finished feature as Damien said in some previews post. So you can't use the multiplier for now. The onli thing that you can do is use the application that Micha post to reduce the intensity of the ies light. The application is very easy to use, just try to make an offset of the light a litter bit down of the original form of the light.
