  • Texturing help!

Ho to everyone! I was wondering....how I can fit this bump texture to my exterior wall. I dont like the tile style.
DO I have to change something of the png texture in photoshop?

The material is from this forum download section.

    V: 20
    W: 15.

Turn on the mapping widgets and size to please...planar would probably do the trick

Your pattern is to small for the wall and so the repeating is visible. Try to get a better bump map. You could try to shot an own photo of a large wall area. At the www you will find tutorials "how to create seamless textures" ... good luck.

Thank you both. So ho the people use this kind of images? Dont understando...which Its a normal size for a wall?

        Thanks.

One more thing is important when you use texture mapping. When you finished your work on model or models, select them and use - Shrink trimmed surface. Sometimes unshrinked surfaces gives incorect mapping, especially when using option - Size to model in mapping menu

I would say it's a bad quality texture, so only some beginners will use it. Size - it depends on the texture. If you like to show a fine noise only, than a small noisy map is ok. If your map show signifcant details, than a bigger area should be covered by the texture.

For a simple but good wall bump you could play with a noise material based on a noise with two octaves and a high fequecy ratio between the tow octaves. The high ferquency for the fine ripple and the low frequency part for the irregular motar thickness.

Here something to start - maybe you need to adjust the "size" option of the noise for your scene. The noise at the diffuse color isn't important and can be deleted.

              Hey Micha,
Where can i learn on the noise settings like octaves and so forth ?

                Re: Texturing help!

I don't know. I know noise shaders from rederman alittle bit. So far I know the octave count let you control how many noise pattern are overlayed.

One more hint: if I want to adjust a noise for bump mapping, than I use a test material with the noise at the diffuse color. If the noise pattern is right I use the settings at the bump too.

                  Re: Texturing help!

The thing is: I have a Wall, and I don't want a repeating tile..stye. I want my image fit the right size of the wall. So which are the steps to know the right size of my map?

                  Thanks a lot!

                    Re: Texturing help!

Tiling can't be avoided in any case - if your map is for an area of 2mx2m, than for a 2mx6m you need a tiling. Most the goal is to avoid a visible (!) tiling. And here you need a good map. (Or you use a procedural shader like the noise).

Some tools like Imagesynth helps to get a random pattern from a photo texture.

But you'll still need to render to see the changes you've made... right ?

                        Yes.

I forget to say - an other advantage of the procedural noise than perfect tiling is, that you are complete independent from mapping problems, the noise looks perfect homogenious everywhere.

Thanks for all your answers! By the way Micha, Why your wall matrial...has differents types of settins...between difuse and bump?

                          thanks.

Because I thought at a wall bump and color are different effects, the diffuse noise was for an "used" effect, but isn't realy needed.
