  • How to use LINUX on the slave machine for DR?

    Hi,

I try to get the spawners running at a LINUX system. At the moment I have Fedora+Wine installed. Now my questions are:

    * How to get the spawner installed without to install Rhino before?

    * Where do I set the IP of the Fedora machine?

    * What should I know to get a connection from the XP64 spawner to the Fedora64 system? (I use XP64<->XP64 on my other machines).

You can actually just simply drag the spawner folder from one machine to the next. It does not need to be installed. If you have a network then all you have to do is have the spawner on the server and all your machines can run off the same spawner. You do not SET the IP adress of your fedora system, your router will do that. You can find out your IP adress by going into the fedora console and typing this
    sudo USERNAME/sbin/ifconfig
with username being the name of your account. If that doesnt work (ive never used fedora enough to know) then you can look into your routers settings to find the IP.

      Hi John,

I tried it and started the spawner without installation from the Fedora file manager. The wine symbol blinked a while and than it disappear without any message.

My Fedora system is a Live USB stick created per Fedora USB stick creator. Also I tried to install the spawner (I found now that "custom" install allow to install without Rhino), but I can't found the installed spawner.

Do you have an idea? Maybe I should install Fedora to a HDD for my first tests.

Ok well if you did get it to install it would be HERE in this picture I show
Do you have the KDE version of fedora or the Gnome? The image is a picture of Ubuntu running the Gnome GUI.

I got an install running and found an entry at your shown place, but the spawner dosn't start, no console window was opened.
I could try to use Ubuntu too. At the moment I use Fedora 64bit. Do you use a 64bit Unbuntu? I would like to get the spawner running at a 64bit Linux. Or can I use only 64bit software on a 64bit Linux?

No, I have 64bit linux and I see the spawner running as we speak. I am sorry your having so much trouble here. Let me think..... do you have the latest version of WINE? How are you attempting to open the .exe? Have you tried right clicking and selecting "open with WINE"? Do a test for me and try to open the notepad program that comes with WINE. Does that open? Can you take a screenshot of your fedora with the wine C: file open?

Re: How to use LINUX on the slave machine for DR?

              Thank you for your patience.

I installed Fedora at my USB stick. This version is without wine. Than I installed wine per automatic download ("yum install wine") from the internet.
I started the copied spawner per RMB. Later I installed the DRSpawner per RMB menu at the install exe. After that I found the DRspawner at the wine menu, but it dosn' work.

Wine seems to allow to install per a Wine installer tool. At this installer tool is a "install" button, but this one dosn't work (grey out). The install from the file manager was working and after the install, I found two entries for deinstalling the spawner at the wine installer tool.

The spawner is installed to a liveuser directory at the USB stick. It's a windows computer, that I use for this test. All drives are visible. Maybe this confuse the spawner start. Do you use a live system too?

My dream would be to use a small cheap USB stick for the OS. The Linux system is quite fast started from the stick. Than it would be great, if a virtual disk (RAM disk) could be used for the storage of the textures/scene. So, a slave computer without HDD, but fast like a SSD could be used. Than it could be great, if an ISO could be created, so that everybody could use it.
I suppose so the problem will be, that we can't set the working directory to the RAM disk for the slave. But step by step. I would be happy to get a Linux system run at a HDD too. Should I try this instead the USB stick version?

Maybe you could try an HDD if you have an extra one laying around. I would hate for you to wipe out a windows install if this doesnt work. I dont have alot of experience with fedora and I have never used a LIVE linux system other than for testing purposes and even then it was only with a CD. Did you say that it did let you install the DR spawner on the USB drive?

Re: How to use LINUX on the slave machine for DR?

Yes, I installed the DRSpawner to the USB Stick. During the Live USB installation I choosed 270MB free space for data. I suppose so that space is used for installations.

                  https://fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator/

Fedora allow me to "install to hard disk" from the Live USB. Some where I have a HDD and I will try it.

Hey Micha, do you have AIM or instant messenger? Anyways, try this and tell me what happens. Open your Linux console (if you know how) and type this
                    Code:
                    wine DRSpawner.exe
                    If that doesnt work try
                    Code:
                    wine C:\Program Files\ASGvis\Render slave\DRSpawner.exe
If that finally doesnt do anything try this
                    Code:
                    sudo wine C:\Program Files\ASGvis\Render slave\DRSpawner.exe

Re: How to use LINUX on the slave machine for DR?

                      Hi John,

I installed Ubuntu at a HDD now - looks very nice. I used the Wubi installer (WINDOWS) and it was quite simple.

First I tried to run the spawner without install and it was not working. Than I installed the Spawner, but don't found, where I can start the installed spawner (it's not installed to the "Programme" dir). So I tried my non-install spawner again - it started. Great. (I will later try to understand the details )

The next step will be that I start Ubuntu on a slave machine. My first test was at my master machine with an old HDD.

If you install it, it will not be in the programs directory. If you look at that picture I posted then you will see where it should be. So I take it you have it working? I sure hope so. Im not sure why it wouldn't work with fedora.

I found the installed DRSpawner at Ubuntu now (I installed Ubuntu at a slave machine), but I dont get it running.

Also I found a way to set the IP at Ubuntu:

                          http://ww1.4hf.de/2008/11/statische-...lem.html/all/1

But I think I stop here, because this news:

                          http://forum.asgvis.com/index.php?topic=6534.0

Let us say, chaosgroup/ASGvis need one year to release it, than I will stick at my five machines (all XP64) and next year I will buy graphic cards instead more slaves. Maybe I buy an i7 920 @3,6GHz with Windows 7 as master machine this autum. The big question for me is now, when will be Vray RT GPU available and will it be ready for Rhino too?

I would wait for word from ASGvis to see what their take on this is before getting your hopes up. I think they are doing the right thing by waiting for OpenCL because that is where the future is really going. CUDA is just not practical for a company like OpenCL is. Your customer base is very limited with CUDA and OpenCL is pretty much everyone that has a computer.
