  • Ways to control reflections independently when using dome light with hdri

    Hi,

Is there a way to fine tune the global reflections independently from the illumination given to Dome light with HDRI ?
    thank you

    Hi Koste
You can do a couple thing here:
    1. You can disable the "affect reflection" and "affect specular" in the dome light and then use the same HDRI in the environment tab (you can use it in the background or in the reflection and refraction) to control the reflection.
    2. You can disable the "affect reflection" and "affect specular" in the dome light and create another dome light. Place the same HDRI in the second dome light and disable the "affect diffuse" on the second dome light. This will basically disable the light from the second dome light and then you can use it to control just the reflection.

Opt. 1 just came to my mind couple of minuted ago, but could not test it yet!!

This should be super powerful !!! Thanks Fernando, appreciated a lot!
Usually I don't bother with boosting reflections/specular for outdoor/indoors scenes but rendering exhibition stand on white reflective ground really sucks with single hdri only!

      May I ask something else..
The video below is done by chaos ..which kind of material should be used for the floor? Honestly I can't rich such reflective floor at the same time appearing so white! As the snowboard has nice reflections on the ground, why than the hdri is not reflected too?? Should be there some sort of attenuation causing the material to reflect closer objects only? For now I can't reach that with single dome light, I always put in addition a rectangular light (horizontal toward down) to neutralize any reflections coming from the HDR

      Thanks in advance
      cheers

@Aleksandar: if you don't use a dome for reflection (it blocks material env settings), than you can use a material based env for the reflections of the ground, for example black or white acolor only. So you don't get reflections from the HDRI on the ground anymore.

Micha, thanks for replying. If I put an Acolor for Reflection under Maps tab, in order to see white I have to increase the multiplier to 50 and that cause rough white reflection on my product coming from the floor.

The reason for the high intensity is that your are looking perpendicular on the background surface, for fresnel plastic it means the reflectivity is very low. I used this setup for plane grounds. In your case I would use more light fisrt. Also you could work with a material based GI env for the ground only. But best try to get a good lighting first, maybe you set the global override material to a bright grey and adjust the lighting first.

                Hi Koste
In that particular scene in the video, we just use a plain material without per material environment option.
Here is the floor and light setup for the scene

honestly I did not believe. Now I can boost the reflections like animal- my floor stays virgin white

Mercii Micha and enjoy the weekend, you deserve
