5.2 has added support for bitmap texture inputs on basic material components in the diffuse and reflection slots (which is great!!) - but area lights still don't support bitmaps in the color slot?
I currently use surface lighting (emissive materials) to create a soft area light in Grasshopper - but emissive materials are slower and less accurate than area lights - so only really work in reflections rather than actually lighting a scene. I suppose I could combine a soft IES light with my surface lighting to create a similar effect - but it would be easier if it was all achievable with one area light component.
