  • Wish (strongly missed): break instances

    Hi,

I copied a texture as instance between different materials in my scene and now I need them independent. I found no way to make the texture "unique" for some materials. Is there really no direct way? If not, than please try to add it soon since there is no easy workaround.

This is not something we expected users would commonly do thus a "Make unique" action was not implemented in the texture asset context menu.
There is currently a solution that requires a minimal amount of clicks:
    • If multiple instances of the same texture are visible in the UI, simply right-click on one of the instances that is not the one you want to make unique. Then, select copy, right-click on the texture you want to no longer be an instance and choose "Paste as Copy".
    • Alternatively, right-click on the texture you want to make unique, select "Wrap In > Color Correction", then Copy the texture that is now slotted within and paste it as a copy over the Color Correction texture.
In most cases users strive to keep textures instanced among multiple materials instead breaking apart their instancing. Can you please share an example where the requested functionality would be often in use?

I don't know if it happens more often, but when you need it, you need it.

We have this button "make unique" for copied and linked lights and it felt good to use the logic for textures as well. But the workarounds help too, I just thought there was no way. Thanks for the tip.
