  • Sketchup keeps CLOSING without explanation.

"Sketchup has stopped working" <--That's what I've been receiving. The attached image is a sample of what I am working with.

I have these massive concrete block blade walls and for them, I am using a reinforced concrete material map. The material is exactly what i want, only i had some difficulty with bump so I scrapped that all together and believe it or not, built each "block." If you look at the attached image, you can see that the wall is just one solid mapped with individual concrete block "panels" separated specifically to create mortar gaps.

Each panel has the concrete material map applied to it. If you notice by this render, only one side of the wall is paneled. The opposite side and all the inner sides of the view window are un-paneled. Why? Because if i panel anymore than 1 side, sketchup "stops working" right as the render image box pops up.

I tried exploding all the panels. But I know for a fact the panels are fine, the render works perfectly (all panels on all sides render) but only without the conc material map. It definitely has something to do with the material but I have no idea what...

Can anyone think of any reason why adding regular sketchup material maps (keep in mind without bump or anything like that) would just stop sketchup all together? I am desperate to resolve this!

    Thank you!

    forgive the mediocre image...

Anyone have any ideas or even just things to try to resolve this?

Does it crash when you render?
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

First - thank you very much for addressing my issue and responding.

Yes, the render window pops up, light cache starts building and then Sketchup just closes....like the image above, it renders when only one side has the concrete paneling. Any more than that, and it crashes.

Your friendly neighborhood support manager chiming in. Sorry for the delay life pulled me away from the forums for a moment there.

It sounds more to me like a memory allocation failure. SketchUp has that nasty memory cap that most of us here on the forums are familiar with and you have made a very complicated scene from what you are telling us. Are you using distributed rendering? I highly recommend you turn that on if at all possible if for no other reason then a life affirming render time for your other scenes.

Lets test your theory too though. Make a simple scene with very little going on and use whatever materials you want but be sure to include something using the SketchUp material then render. If it crashes it is probably something wrong with that material.

Let me know how it turns out, now that I am back on the forums you will get a much faster response.

Once i had SU closing after start of LC building. What i did to solve it is, i did preview on each material in the VfSU material editor window. One of the materials wasn't synced with the texture bitmap, and even a preview command crashed SU.

On the second issue (texture appearance), I would suggest you to check the normals direction.

Re: Sketchup keeps CLOSING without explanation.

              I appreciate the responses.

I actually think alrami is correct, something having to do with memory.

Keep in mind, there is no bump or special vray material involved...its a simple SU map...I basically avoided dealing with bumping altogether and "paneled" the entire side of the wall with individual geometries. In the image, each concrete block rectangle is a flat individual panel 1/2" in thickness with a 1" gap in between them to give some detail and form.

But there are so many of them used at once, I suppose SU just can't handle it. Today, I opened a new file and am manually pulling pieces from the original model and basically rebuilding it and scrapping all the excess that won't show up...this is just to simplify and eliminate unneeded MB.

Thank you for your comments. I will try the distributed rendering thing, and if nothing works, then who knows, i'll try and find another way.

Re: Sketchup keeps CLOSING without explanation.

I've no idea what could cause that issue, but I do have one question: why did you post a 3000 x 2250px 4.6Mb png image? I had to wait about a minute for it to open on my admitedly slow broadband connection. PNGs are good for saved renders, non-lossy texture editing and very low detail images, but JPG is the way to go for posting renders. I resized it to 1000px wide, saved as jpg and it was 184kb.
