  • Creating realistic long hair fur in V-Ray Next for Sketchup

    Hi!

I´m in the visualization business for a while right now and i´m on a good way to create highly realistic images.

But in one way i´m totally stuck and i spent already days in the web, searching for resources or tutorials how to create a realistic looking fur with V-Ray Fur.

Short hair carpets are fine, they are quiet easy to create but i´m totally lost when i´m trying to create long hair fur like a long hair sheep whool carpet, blanket or similar assets.

Does anybody (Chaos Group Support included) has an idea, how to create the necessary maps and which settings i would need to adjust to create realistic results like as shown in this example?

I´m thankful for every single input from your side!

    Cheers!

    Hi,

    Thank you for your post!
To achieve more natural results with the Fur option I would recommend to use maps for the various parameters.
I think that the Bend Direction Map gives great initial results and after that you can add maps for Length, Thickness and so on.
Note that the direction maps are driven by RGB values. Red: u texture offset Green: v texture offset Blue: surface normal offset. In the example file attached below I have used procedural maps(noise B) just for illustrative purposes. For realistic results, dedicated fur maps will be more appropriate.

For more information about the Fur parameters please see the following link: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/VNFS/Fur
Note: a material with a bitmap in the Diffuse slot should be added to the geometry under the Fur. This is required for correct mapping of the Fur.

slavcho.brusev Thanks a lot for your answer and also the attached file.

As i understood right, there is no official way how to archive results like shown in my example.
It´s more like "V-Ray offers the technology to archive it but it´s a trial and error process" and with some luck, i´m getting a satisfying result

I´m hoping that Chaos Group is handing out some presets to their customers in the future as it takes a lot of time and effort to generate an acceptable result in creating realistic fur.

      Anyway thanks for your reply.

This is something we've seen commonly requested and have discussed internally. More feedback is always welcome!

What Fur types do you most commonly use?
What presets would save you time most often?
Are there any other types of assets you wish had particular presets that take you too much time to create or the creation process itself feels too repetitive?

As i´m working mostly in the ArchViz and Product Viz Industry, i just can speak for myself.

I´m using the fur tool mostly for towels, carpets, rugs and blankets or if it comes to closeups, hairy details of furniture fabrics.
That means natural or synthetic fur for decorative assets.

Additionally to that, i would like to work more often with V-Ray Fur if it comes to exterior shots.
Mostly i´m using Skatter for Sketchup and 3D Assets of Grass from Quixel Megascans or Skatter directly, but this takes a lot of time and memory of my computer.

So presets for Cut Lawn, Mid Grass, High Grass in different variations would be highly appreciated as well in my opinion.

Thank you sincerely for sharing your thoughts!
Some of them overlap with what we've already marked for improvement. A quote of your post is now attached to one of the concepts in our internal ticketing system.

            Kind regards,

                Thanks for your reply.
I was trying to implement your texture into the density map slot but it has no effect at all.

It´s great what you can archive with it but i´m wondering which settings i need to tweak additionally that i will get a result close to yours...

Would you be so kind to share your complete VRayFur settings for f.e. the first render you posted?

I would appreciate that a lot, to check if it is also possible to recreate this within V-Ray for SU.

it is a bend direction map. not density.

uniform density is fine, just set it to what you need
very low thickness combined with very strong taper
random bend direction close to zero.
lenght around 8cm in my case
lower gravity a bit if fur feels too “heavy”

                  other than that - defaults.

I was trying to set it up like you described.

Attached some screenshots of my settings and the result....that´s quiet frustrating...

lets try one more time. the basic setup for clumping fur. before I record anything I would like to see it working in su as well. bend direction map and settings. in my example map is 100x100cm, the cube is roughly size of an adult head.

                            Here´s the result.

Oval sphere with height about 300mm
All Settings adjusted like you did
Texture Map in the Bend Direction Map slot - Tested in color space "linear" and "screen space" - same result.

If anybody is going to tell me (like i heard so many times) that both V-Ray Versions (3DSMax & Sketchup) are the same, that´s simply not true.
