  • What is that folder?

    Hi,
    What is this folder in :
    V-Ray for Sketchup/extension/library/materials

    It contains 499 JPEG files in 38 subfolders for a total of 70 MB.

    It seems to have been installed when V-Ray was first installed.

    What is it used for? Can it be deleted?​

    Apologies for the very late reply!

    A while ago we updated the V-Ray material library assets to use 4K image files in .tx format instead of the earlier lower-res .jpg files.
    This change affected V-Ray for SketchUp/Rhino/Revit. Due to limitations in some of the host platforms, the old .jpg files were left as part of the V-Ray installation in order to provide lightweight alternatives for viewport representation instead of the more cumbersome .tx files.
    It allows V-Ray to offer increased quality of its built-in material assets while retaining the viewport performant.

    Altering or deleting any file located within C:\Program Files\Chaos Group (or /Applications/ChaosGroup on macOS) is highly discouraged.

      Hi DCHA34 ​,

      I actually want to add something to what Peter said.
      One of the reasons for us to ship the jpg textures from the old library is out texture paths auto-resolution logic.

      When you open any scene in V-Ray we apply an advanced logic that resolves file paths:
      1) We first check if the stored texture file path is valid and if it is we use it.
      2) If not, we try to find the texture in the built-in library locations.
      That is where the jpgs come into play.
      The original old library was located in `V-Ray for Sketchup/extension/library/materials` and we decided to keep the textures there so that older scenes can still get auto-resolved in case the user has not packet the textures with the skp.
      3) Our lase resort, in case a texture is nowhere to be found in the library is to do a deep folders search relative to the .skp file

      We will consider stop shipping these files at one point.

      The issue that Peter described in his post has been addressed in a different way.
      We do use jpg files to show in the host app's viewport but they are now auto-generated.
