Thanks for your words of encouragement. I hope my initial, relative, success with this texture is not just a fluke.
I used 'gi_irmap_medium.visopt' plus a rectangular light to cast the shadows.
I do need to spend a bit of time smoothing the curved chrome tubing (although it isn't noticeable from a distance - I guess a Rhino renderer wouldn't use that as an excuse!!)
I've also realised that using the same u and v settings for the diffuse map gets it to scale correctly, however the leather texture I'm using is a little bit too 'in your face' so I'm looking for something a bit more subtle.
