Can someone tell me what has to be checked or selected to get the black strip with the render info at the bottom of the rendered picture.

When the Frame buffer opens up, there are a bunch of smaller icons down at the bottom. The ones on the left are very useful, but all the way on the right you'll see an icon with 2 little arrows pointing down. That will slide a new little bar at the bottom of the frame buffer and you'll see some text in there. The first icon after the text input area will place the stamp on the image.
