Morning again, (dalomar Sighs reading yet another Tsubiaddict post )

I was wondering if anyone has perfected or created a Visopt for a night / evening scene.

I am wanting to render this evening scene using sketchups daylight shadows and allowing the lights from inside the building to be visible.

However the daylight seems far too bright I have lowered its mulitiplier in the Environment GI (skylight from 1 --> 0.5) maybe I should reduce this further?!?! The problem I am having is the light seems so intense no internal lights are being shown.....maybe I should up there mulitpliers (omni 0.2 + 0.3, rectangle lights 5 and 7)? Lastly the daylight is bleaching some of the buildings facades around the site.

    Any ideas... ???

    Kind Regards

I'm also really struggling with the right settings for a night time render... i just can't seem to get the GI lighting to mimic the moonlight. Therefore i'm working with small omnilights to create the moonlight effect. This methode is not very efficient offcourse.. So if anyone has a good tip or a visopt, that would make my day .

    Cheers

I've been looking at silvershadows scene http://asgvis.com/index.php?option=c...12884#msg12884 and wondered if lighting the scene with an appropriate HDRI would solve your problem. Just a thought - I haven't tried it myself!

Let us know how you get on

          Re: Night time scene

You could also do it without HDRI and post in a night time sky... Here's a real quick and dirty model i threw together to test grass displacement. In this 640x480 render I used IR/LC with VERY low, dark blue GI environment settings (to simulate moonlight) and phys cam...no post work. There are some wierd bright spots/artifacts where the grass touches the wall, but if I tweak it a little and I'm sure they could be corrected.

              Re: Night time scene

Thanks...not much time or effort invested on my part really. I need a good exterior model with transparent and reflective materials to really test the settings effectively. Just haven't got the time to generate something right now because of a closing deadline.

It is a vray sun + 5 omnis in that shot...but I can't recall all the render option settings I used in it. That stuff is all at work and I've finally retired for the night. Tomorrow I could post those figures, but my other settings I'm testing for IR/LC are somewhat resolution and quality specific. If you gave me an idea of what size your rendering will be and whether speed or quality is most important, I could try to come up with a quick visopt you can start with and adjust as required to suit your needs.

In the mean time, here's one more test of the all too familiar Sponza scene in the pale moonlight. No materials (clay model), GI only (VERY diminished Vray sun). Again, no post. I know it's extremely dark, but I was just trying to get an idea of how moon-like I can get the GI to appear with no other light interferring. Oh well...I'm done for today.

It would indeed be very helpful if you could post your settings and stuff, when you have the time offcourse... In the mean time, i'll just keep messing my renders up, untill you post again :P

                Cheers!

                  Re: Night time scene

no problem; i'd be happy to share. two questions first:

                  1. what resolution do you intend to render at?
                  2. very low, low, medium, high, very high, or super-high quality? keep in mind the quality will inversely affect the speed of your render.

These two items will help me to determine what I think will be the appropriate initial settings for the Image Sampler, QMC Sampler, Irradiance Map, and Light Cache. Give me an idea of what you're after, and i'll make you a quick visopt...

                    Re: Night time scene

Quick reply.. i thought you were done for today .
I intended to render at 1280x960 with a medium quality. The thing that isn't working for me is to get the right background/sky. I can only get the night sky totally black.. but with your example it seems darkblue(ish), or is that me? Do you use any omni lights to show a little bit of exterior building, or is that GI at a certain setting..? I hope i gave you enough info... Thanx alot, i appreciate it.

                    greets

                      Re: Night time scene

I was done for the day...last night! It's now 4:15pm where I am...
Ok, attached below is a quick visopt I threw together for you to try out. Let me know how that works. If you need to adjust the intensity of GI (not physical camera exposure), refer to the attached image.

Also, there are no omnis on the "outside" of the building in that earlier image...the fascade is all lit by either GI, or light that was cast out of the openings from inside.

                      Good luck!

                        Re: Night time scene

oh yeah...one more thing to mention. you can also adjust the "white balance" in the physical camera settings flyout. selecting a light orangey-yellow color (rgb: 240/220/190 or so) will bring out quite a bit of blueish color in your GI. Makes it look even more like moon light to me:

Well, first of all i want to thank you again for your help. I'm now able to make a night render that actually looks like a night scene! . the visopt however didn't work but only changing the GI settings you added in the jpg was enough to make it work. Now i can tweak a few settings to make it look the way i want it. Anyway you helped me get started so thanx again for that.

                            regards

No problem...glad I could help! I'm a little surprised the visopt didn't work though. ??? Just out of curiousity, did you remove the ".txt" part from the end of the file first? I may try to send it again tomorrow in a zip file. Either way, i'm glad you got it sorted out. Best of luck...
