  • Shadow quality

    I'm using Irradiance Map and Light Cache to create a render.

    But I'm having a problem related to the ceeling. I can't get better shadows than showed on the attached image. I have tried to play around with both Sample Size and Subdivisions

    What can I do to improve the quality ?

    Thanks

    Re: Shadow quality

    Well, what you're seeing is more related to IR than LC. There's a little loop hole in our default settings that put the adaptive amount at 1. This is usually not too bad, but when doing any sort of interior shots, this causes vast underplacement of IR samples. There are essentially very large gaps between some of the IR samples in the darker areas and thats where the artifacts are probably coming from. Changing the Adaptive Amount to .85 should help things quite a bit. After that you might have to bump up the hemispheric subdivisions a bit, but change the adaptive amount first.

      Hi Damien

      Thanks for your input. I will try that later. I had to finish the image using Photoshop.

      VRay is a rather complex program, and has a lot of settings

        Re: Shadow quality

        Its very complex...however, once you begin to understand what each one is doing and how each one is working, it all starts to make a more complete picture. At a certain point the complexity melts away and you begin to see everything as a system instead of random setting here or random setting there.

            From the looks of some of your stuff David, I think you're a good ways down that path. Spot 3d will answer just about all of your questions, although you may have to read it over and over for a while ;D

              Hi Damien

              Can you please explain where I find the adaptive amount and what IR means ?

              Thanks

                Re: Shadow quality

                IR = Irradiance Map

                Adaptive Amount is in the DMC Sampler
