  • render all scenes?

    Hey guys,

Is it possible to automaticly render all the scenes's I have created? if so does vray has to process the scene again everytime.... this takes a long time (like 3 min). I set up a small renderfarm of 4 computers.

    thnx in advance

    Re: render all scenes?

You can do this by "faking" an animation....enable animation in the V-Ray Output rollout and set the fps to 1. In SU, set the scene transition to 1 second and the delay to 0. That should work. No, V-Ray will not have to reparse the scene, since in animation mode V-Ray will only grab the scene at the start of the sequence.

I worked......... only not if u got face me objects in your scene, because the can't turn that quick.

          Re: render all scenes?

As Dalomar said, VfSU will only parse the SU setup from the first scene, including face-me components, hidden objects and layer visibility.

When I really need to do a long batch render of a bunch of scenes from the same file, but with different face-me comp angles, hidden objects or layer visibility, my workaround is to setup a "master" skp file with all the scenes I need, then "save as" so I have identical skp files and then I uncheck the scenes I don't want from each of the files (so each skp file only has scenes checked which share the same attributes and similar camera angles).

Then I open all the skp files (I've only ever tried with a maximum of 3 as I suspect my system could become unstable with more) and (having ensured that the VRay render save paths and names are setup properly) I click the render button in each SU window one after another (it makes sense to wait until VRay has parsed each skp file and opened its respective frame buffer or you may crash your system). It'll take a while to get going, but a VRay frame buffer will open for each skp file and VRay will slowly render out 3 separate sets of renders simultaneously.... sloooowly!

It's ironic that athough it is annoying that SU has to open a fresh instance every time you open more than one skp file it actually allows for a really handy workaround in VRay: batches of batch renders! ;D

hey... yeah that's good idea. 3 renders at once... that's better than 1 . I justed wanted to render all 18 (or so) scenes overnight, because the deadline is today.... but I'm fixing it now.

              Hey, did I miss something?

When it finished rendering my 4 scenes I got just one image, and I saved it. It saved just the last scene, but it rendered the 4 ones.

In output menu select save file, and select/browse the saving location on your hardisc. Then when you'll render, all rendered images will be saved on that location.

What I do is open like 3 instances of SU with my model to render at the same time. Not the best way as it slaughters my computer, but then again... it works! Can't get 18 renders but 3 is better than 1!

Might end up being slower as they all fight fro the RAM and more disk caching is required...
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

Very likely but I know that each render takes maybe an hour and a half to two hours, and I didn't know how to render multiple scenes so I just did that through the night.

Exactly what I wrote 4 posts above. Combined with batch rendering, it's entirely possible to render out 3 independant sets of 6 renders as a batch.

It is slower, but it has worked fine for me in the past- as far as I can tell it more or less multiplies the render time fairly linearly, so 2 SU instances rendering the same image in 2 separate VRay frame buffers seems to take approximately twice the amount of time as one. Of course the way the operating system is actually dividing up the work will be way more complex than that, but render times seemed to come out roughly as multiples.

It's a neat trick if you need many images from a single skp model, but you need face-me comps to update for different camera views, for different layer visibility or even for 2 different projects. I had to render an external night view with loads of lights and a daylight interior overnight for a big deadline a while ago and the "double instance trick" worked without a hitch. Damn was I nervous checking my screen the next morning- it could have been all or nothing!

BTW, especially as I work on a measly 1.5Gb RAM PC, I am constantly impressed with just how efficiently VRay works with RAM and caching- the only time I have seen a "run out of memory" type error was testing a 10,000 x 6000 px image, just to see where my system's limit was.

I get the error message all the time - I do use alot of textures in my models and I'm pretty sure thats why I run out of memory. Thank god for the render out to file option otherwise Vray would be useless for me.
Fingers crossed Google bring out a 64bit version of Sketchup sometime this decade.

                            Re: render all scenes?

What do mean by "a lot of textures"? Do you mean actual numbers or diffuse map size?

I just had a quick check and the most individual textures I have in a skp file is 58 (I clean, purge and reapply textures like a crazy person, especially if using anyone elses' components), but I frequently use HUGE diffuse, bump, environment and reflection maps up to 15000 x 7500 pixels which are a major memory drain, but so far, apart from parsing slower they haven't brought VRay or my old laptop to it's knees.... yet.

How is your paging file set up?
