  • Material creation...am I doing it right?

Hi guys, I'm still a new user with Vray so want to double check that I am using the software 'optimally'.
I have been browsing the forum today looking at older posts and read a few about linked materials which made me wonder if the way I am creating and applying materials is the correct way of using vray. Heres an example of how I use it.
1- Create model geometry within sketchup
2- Create textures and bumpmaps etc in third party apps. I rarely use any default materials as they are hardly ever relevant to any of my projects and I often create texture maps using my own on site photos.
3-Apply texture jpegs to my skecthup model and change material name within sketchup i.e. brick texture will be named 'Brick1' in sketchup materials editor list.
4-Once all textures applied to sketchup model I then open up Vray material editor screen.
5-Go thru each material i.e. 'Brick1' and add bumpmaps/reflection values etc. to create 'Brick1' Vray material
    6-Hit render....

So that is my typical workflow. I thought that any brick texture that is called 'Brick1' in my sketchup model will automatically render out using the 'Brick1' vray material. Am I wrong? My render outputs seem ok and the materials seem to work as intended.
To be honest I've never used this linked material feature that I have read about today, should I be doing? Am I creating Vray materials the wrong way? Whats the advantage/disadvantage? I'm a bit confused, LOL!

Don't worry about old posts as those reference our first system which required you guys to be more "active" in material creation. Now, V-Ray materials and SU materials are automatically linked and updated, so anything that you do within one environment is echoed in the other. It makes it much easier and you really don't have to worry about it. The only material property that's going to be linked (besides the name) is the diffuse color information as that's all SU can really handle. As long as you've set up diffuse information (which is usually the first step for almost any materials), then feel free to add the rest of the material information (bumps reflections etc) as you see fit.

Thanks for the reply Damien, I have to admit by being slightly confused by the older posts. Good to see that Vray has actively evolved over time, it just proves that the development team are doing their job properly ;D
