  • strange texture + lightning

hey guys I wanted to make a quick render of my WIP and I noticed some strange thing in my texture which I marked with red. I applied the texture to the group because it has displacement and otherwise I can't get it to work. Is that normal to apply materials with displacement to the group (not each individual face)?

I also notice the weird lightning (those spots). Normally I use single faced glass with no see through material. Now I used a 6mm thick glass with the "clear glass" material. I used vray sky with physical cam.

    here's the render:

    thnx in advance

oke the glass problem is solved... it didn't have "affect shadows" ticked

Did you apply soften/smooth edges via SU? If so check the degree figure, so it's not too high.

hmm.... I NEVER apply materials to groups/components due to the increased render time and smooth geometry rendering faceted.
I didn't think that materials applied to groups/components would show displacement. However, you do have to group the faces you apply a displacement material to. If it's connected to any other material the displacement won't take effect.

oke good to know it's better to not apply materials to groups. I'll try to group every single face. Hope that also fixes the stange texturing a market in red.

          thnx for the replies

          btw I didn't use soften/smoothen.

It looks as thought the normals are poorly built around that area. This is typically the case with long thin triangles, which appears to be the structure of the underlying geometry. Displacement will use the normals of the geometry to displace the mesh, so if those aren't consistent and uniform, then it will lead to some undesirable results.

Can you post screenshot of the model from SU, all white with black lines - and hidden lines on?

                Re: strange texture + lightning

the render is done without the faces subdivided.... I just added them recently and wanted to give it another try.

                my new render:

What I now did is apply the material to the faces and then made 1 group out of it.
btw It rendered way faster applying materials to the faces itself and not to the groups

oke I ajusted the model a bit and now I doesn't displace anymore.
this is what it looks now:

Are all the 'reed' faces grouped?

yes (it's all in 1 group) it worked before now I edited a bit... used subivide and smooth and at the top I made it more compact
