  • Bump Maps???

I'm having trouble learning how to apply a bump map to a sketchup linked material. I'm working my way through the Vray instruction manual and have got as far as the Bump Map section.

I have followed everything until I got to the part where it says:

    3. Click on the ”m” to the right of Bitmap,
select the appropriate grey-scale bump map texture for the brick.

When I click the 'm' it takes me to the Vray materials folder and I dont know how to locate the grey-scale bump map texture or if one even exists! lol

Please forgive my ignorance if there is a really straight forward solution. I've been using Podium in the past and I apply bumps to materials by simply typing 'bump' next to the material then a value.

This new method is all a little new/strange to me ???

    hey,

oke first of all you're using the old version of vray for SU,
second. Vray using a greyscaled map version of your texture to know what to bump. You can make this in GIMP / PS or what ever programn you want to use.

Does the new version use a different technique to do this? Is there an instruction manual for the new version? I cannot make a grayscale image from the sketchup material because it is a skm file.

        Re: Bump Maps???

no as far as I know it's the same technique in the old and new version. Once you applied your sketchup material you can go to edit in the material editor (sketchup material editor) and click on the icon with the orange arrow (edit texture in external editor) and now the texture opens in your default windows picture viewer. Now edit this one in your photo edit programn. If you use gimp I would go to filter > map > bump map. And then desaturate the image. Store it on your harddisk somewhere. and when you click on the "m" in bump maps you can locate the bump map. Hope this helps

        good luck

          Re: Bump Maps???

Bump maps don't exist in SU - its a 'rendering thing'.

To make a bump map from your existing image, there are a number of tutorials - here is one - http://tutorials.texturama.com/tut_quickbump.html

            Thanks guys.... excellent pointers.

PS: remon_v, how did you work out that i'm using an older version of Vray if the technique for bumping is the same in both the old and new versions?

              Re: Bump Maps???

because you´re talking about linked materials. In the new version the materials are linked automaticly
