How bout it believers, is the sky falling?
    http://sketchup.google.com/download/

My testing indicates it works fine if you correct the path when installing V-Ray but I am still going at it. Anyone else who's playing with it let me know how it works for you.

                Re: SketchUp 8!

They supposedly fixed some of the stuff behind the scenes that we could possibly use. Considering how broken those things were in the past though... I don't know if we can trust them yet. I also don't know if using those things would really improve our product any. The real stuff we wanted (like the ability to rename a material for instance) didn't make it in to SketchUp 8... ::cries::

Not going to ever be able to compare SU against Max and Maya etc.
Max and Maya require you to render the model, while SU provides realtime sketchy looking viewports with shadows. That and the infering engine prevents you from stuffing millions of polygons into SU. SU was designed to be a sketch tool - it's all about choosing the right tool for the right job.

Yea - I'm eager to test out the new observers. Should have the chance soon.
As for material and layer setters. That is my next crusade - I'll be on it like a ,.... something really persistant ..... o_O ya!

Surprised? Same old story from SU7. Though SU7.1 was a much bigger improvement IMO with the performance increase.
Google bought SketchUp because it fit their needs - and I do think that Google's agenda for 3D data is of big influence to the feature development of SketchUp. We saw how it was with SU6 to SU7 - I was not surprised by SU8 and I don't think SU9 will wow people either. SU's wow times is probably at an end a long time ago.
It remains an easy 3D app with shallow learning curve where most of it's features are available for free.

                          Re: SketchUp 8!

Not having improved UV tools is a bit of a disaster for SU8. *sigh*

yeah, I really wish they had better uv mapping.

I allready know that tom : but i "wish" that it would be diferent, i wish we can have the best of the 2 worlds, a very easy to learn modeler, capable of handle millions of polygons.

by the way...your not invited tom :P
