  • Turn on displacement, fails to create dump file (crash). Turns off, it renders!

I have a scene with a grass made of displacement. I rendered a front scene of the house, it rendered perfectly and was very beautiful.

Then I set a scene from the back side of the same house. I added a few more stuff in the scene (a 2d person, a few plants, a bed inside the house).

Then I try to render. FAILS TO CREATE DUMP FILE. After some meddling, I discovered that turning off the grass displacement makes the render work again. BUT its so much more beautiful and realistic with the displacement grass!

Any idea why the displacement map on a single material may be causing this? How to circunvent it? Thanks

The dump file message you saw, was SketchUp letting you know that it's crashing so fast and hard, that it can't write a crash report. You're probably getting a crash because you're running out of memory. Displacement can use up a lot of system resources if there's a lot of it, and it's complex.

      ;D Hi guys,

I'm also experienced this some times. Especially if i got more than 1 displacement material. I wonder if we cant render it more than 1 disp. material, then how can we make it happen? coz 1 its not enough, i guess...
      ;D

p/s : 1 of the things that can causing this to happen is you got a lot of modelling inside your scene. Same like mine. I dont know whether this is because of SU or Vray limitation...? ???

Re: Turn on displacement, fails to create dump file (crash). Turns off, it renders!

I understand the problem now. I was using large surfaces for the displacement map. Someone told me I should break them down in smaller ones, so I divided them by 2 and by 2 and by 2 again, and made each one a group.

        Still a crash.

THEN I understood that what I needed to do was to use displacement on MESHES!!! With thousands of triangles (very small surfaces). I thought meshes consumed too much memory, but turns out that a big mesh with thousands of triangles and displacement on it consumes far less memory than one big face with displacement.

        it didnt crash again.

Or you could've install this RAM patch which you can find in a "Tips,Tricks, Tutorials" section of this forum. It does magic.
