  • Physical Cam from Max to Unreal

Is any of the Physical Cameras (Max or VrayCam) fully supported for export to Unreal?
Animation, plus Motion Blur + DOF?

If so, do you have an official step by step guide from Chaosgroup that shows your recommendation how to export/import?
    FPS setup, etc. etc.

    Hi, Bernhard

The Max and V-Ray camera are supported for import in Unreal but not all features are supported yet. You can check the docs on what is currently supported on import here: Supported features.

Animation, plus Motion Blur + DOF is not currently supported on import but it is supported when you render from Unreal. Note that motion blur is supported only in sequencer animations.

hmmm.. so that means.. when using Vray for Unreal, I would need to create all my camera animations within the Unreal Engine, if I want to use DOF + MB?

        Hi, Bernhard

At the moment yes, you do have to set the camera animation in Unreal(inside sequencer) + the Motion blur(option inside the V-Ray export options for the animation). DoF on the other hand is supported both in animation and in still images, you just have to set the focus method of the camera from none to Manual(Tracking needs a little bit of work to be supported).
In the future we will try to add support for animated camera on import but no ETA on that.

        Best regards,
        Alexander

yessss... that would be super cool. My main reason to push scenes over to unreal (and having all the major features you usually have in max/maya/etc.) is to do camera animation work inside of Unreal.
I mean, once a scene is baked - I can create my camera animation within the Unreal engine.
If I do have the same options and features also available in Unreal - wopaa.... a dream comes trues.
          Cutting long render-times.

Alex.. but still one more question to this topic.. just for clarification and making wise choices when it comes to camera animation.

I usually do all my camera work inside of 3dsmax.
And of course, it would be cool if I could use all the camera animations I created inside 3dsmax for unreal.

            But just to clarify:
This is not supported yet, right?

I am talking about, exporting camera animations from 3dsmax--> to Unreal

If that's the case and if I want to have camera animations done in Unreal, at this point I have to create all my camera animations directly in Unreal.
And if I have already a project done in 3dsmax, that contains all the camera work, I basically have to re-do all the camera work in the Unreal engine.

            Is this correct?

              Hi, Bernhard

Yes, currently we do not support animation import with the vrscene and you will have to redo all the animation inside the Unreal sequncer. This will be added later as a feature. At the moment you could try Datasmith to import your camera animations to speed up the process.
