  • A simple ocean...

Hi there Vray GPU team and everyone else around.

I have a challenge. This is a simple scene of 2 planes and a Sun&Sky system. Displacement done using Phoenix FD Map.

The displacement calculation took 17 seconds @ 4500x3000PX image render. With Corona renderer.

I simply cannot make this in Vray . I recently got a 3090 RTX because I would like to switch to Vray but this is a complete deal breaker for me. I tried using the Phoenix Liquid Simulator for the displacement but, as stated before in previous posts that simply does NOT work. As soon as I try to get good quality by increasing the subdiv numbers, the calculations takes ages, even runs out of RAM ( I have 64 GB ). Someone told me I use too high values, but If I don't do that the displacement looks like crap especially when it's further away from the camera,

So what is happening guys? I really don't want to sound condescending but there must be a way to do such a simple scene in vray right? A nice guy around here suggested to use pluginnodetex but again, if I go above 1920x1080 it all dies, calculation times go off the roof.

I'm really curious if such thing can be done via Vray GPU.

    Thank you

I run in the problem too - I need an ocean surface (V-Ray for Rhino). I wonder why there is no direct usable ocean shader with foam and procedural waves, best distances dependent 2D displacement on a infinite plane. It a clear defined task? Please, dear Chaosgroup team, add a solution for it.

I can render a 3000x1668 version of this on a 2080ti in only a few seconds, using 10.3 of the available 11gb, so any more than that and I would guess naturally it fails.
This is with the pluginnodetex, so definitely works here. This is with a large plane, as a vray infinite plane won't work.

Bear in mind that Corona is cpu only, so can't really compare
