  • Maya viewport performance

Less of a GPU rendering question, and more of an interface performance question...I was wondering if any has had any experience with upgrading from a lowly 1080ti or similar to a 30 series card, and how that afffected texture loading, or heavy asset manipulation.

The more ram the better. I updated from a 2070 to a 3060 with 12 gb. In scenes with a lot of textures it feels a lot smoother. Specially if you have other tools like substance open at the same time.

I would go for a card with 16gb ram minimum.

My 1080ti has 11GB ram and has performed admirably over the years...Im happy to even splash on a 3090 if the viewport gains are worth it. Im worried Ill boot up to find its mostly the same though.

Viewport performance depends a lot on single core speed of the CPU, quite often the bottleneck is there since all the data must be computed by the processor first. If you use many high res texture in the viewport a new GPU will help though.

          Good point sirio76
CPU single threaded performance is a big factor, this applies to both 3Ds Max and Maya
Something like a 3060 12 GB should be ideal for viewport performance, it will be a lot faster than a 1080ti
a 3080ti or a 3090 will not be that much faster than a 3060 for viewport performance, the CPU bottleneck becomes more obvious
The new CPUs, 13900k and R9 7950X will help a lot. They have good single threaded performance

Ive got a 3990x so not amazing single thread....but I havnt compared to lower core count cpus. Thats interesting about the 3060 possibly being as potent in viewport performance as a more expensive card...that could save a chunk of change.

the 3990x is descent on single threaded performance, not as fast as the 13900k or Ryzen 7950X but still should do a good job if paired with a good GPU
I'm using it now with 2x 3080tis, again a 3060 should be great and similar in viewport performance
