  • GPU doesn't support bitmap texture blur?

Hi guys, I am using VRay 5.1 with Max 2021. I noticed this limitation but it's not mentioned here:
    https://docs.chaos.com/display/VMAX/...tures-Textures
So I am here to double-check to see if I am doing it wrong or if it's a bug.

What I found out was: no matter using max native bitmap or VRayBitmap, no matter when the Blur option/value under coordinates is enabled or increased, no matter if the coordinates is set to texture or environment, or any mapping settings like screen/spherical/cylinder, VRay GPU still renders completely clear image. When I apply this bitmap texture to a vray material/standard legacy material/environment background, it stays clean and ignores the blur value.

Meanwhile, when switched to CPU, everything renders out fine with perfect blur.

Any tips and tricks? Thank you so much!

    Hey onyxlee

Thanks for the feedback, V-Ray GPU uses box filtering by default, and there is no way to control the filter strength/blue value for individual bitmaps
This is on the GPU roadmap, and there is research being done now to improve GPU texture filtering, offering control over mipmap size using Blur value like what you requested.
I also made a note about updating the supported features page on this

Thank you so much, sir. I will just use photoshop to blur it for now.
Regarding that feature list, maybe more small things are not included on that list like this one. If your devs can list them, it can save us tons of time. Thanks again.

Noted I will work with the GPU devs on improving this page

Thanks again. On second thought, it would be nice if one of these methods can be implemented:
1, under GPU renderer, some unsupported options are grayed out.
or 2, when trying to use some unsupported options, a dialogue box shows this feature will be available on the roadmap.
or 3, in the rendering log window, show an error message saying that this and that options that are currently in place are currently ignored.

Any of these above will save us tons of time. Thanks again.

Third one is something we have been working on, it works with some of the parameters already but not all. We plan to extend that
The GPU UI is getting updated regularly as well, I will update the thread when I have more information about GPU texture filtering

            Thanks again
