  • 3DSMax Spot lights using VRayShadows in area mode don't work in GPU?

So I'm using some standard Max spotlights with VRay shadows and Area shadows turned on, but it looks like things are just completely hard-edged.

And if I render in CPU, Here's what I get.

The difference in softness of the shadows is obvious.
    Can this be fixed/added/resolved?

    Thanks!

They are not supported, I'm afraid. Wouldn't directional V-Ray lights suffice?

Not even close - there's no direct control of distance falloff, and only vague control of angle. I'd request that you gray out this option when on GPU, as to not lead people to assume it would work when it won't - at least throw an warning to the log.

For those possibly checking up on this for a solution, I found just cloning the lights as instances to cover the desired area and then dividing the original brightness by the # of lights did the trick quite nicely. I was worried the render time would balloon, but I didn't notice much of a difference.

Just so you know, we'll consider improvement (internal bug-tracker id: VGPU-2353).

Came to render a job I'd initially set up in Vantage, to render in GPU, and I'm really surprised that area shadows still aren't supported. I mean if vantage can handle it, surely GPU can? For me, using spot lights is a big thing.
