  • 3ds Max Vray 6 Hotfix 1, GPU crashes at beginning of building light cache

    Hi,

I'm using 2x3090 RTX with 3ds Max on Windows 11. I'm facing strange behavior that depending on the camera angel or zoom level, 3ds Max crashes at the beginning of building the light cache. The same scene work fine with CPU render and also different angels. I've also tried to roll back the Nvidia driver to a supported version, and still the same problem. Any advice will be appreciated.

    K.

We most likely need the scene to determine what's causing the crash. Send it via the contact form, mentioning this thread.

        Are you using NVlink?
Does this happen with every scene?
GPU LC works fine on my end, our automated tests are all fine as well. There is something specific to your scene, we need to reproduce this on our side.
As Alex mentioned we need a sample scene if possible, thanks!

I have the same issue. Two 3090 RTX connected with NvLink, and the lightcache freezes at the beginning of the phase. It seems to be scene specific but I cant find the culprit...
I have sent you my scene: ticket #56828.

Thank you in advance for the help!

I installed vray 6 Hotfix 1 and experience the same issue. Always at the same time: after 8/9 seconds of building the Light Cache. But this time I get an error in the logs.

            [OOCRenderThread::syncStream] 700:
            Stream sync failed

ps: I use the last recommended Nvidia driver: 512.59

Error 700 can be a result of many things, I asked for access to your file and will test on my side. I will get back to you shortly
I suspect you are running out of GPU memory, please check my advice on optimizing GPU memory here in the meantime

                Hi Muhammed!
Thank you for your help. And sorry if the file is super messy.
I thought first about gpu memory but I am using only 30-40 % of my maximum ( 2 X 24gb).
I downgraded to the last built of vray 5 and it works fine.

                    Hey everyone,

I have had this issue multiple times. I found a work around that will keep you rendering with no crashes. Change your GI from light cache to brute force. Your renderings will not freeze anymore. I also know the formula to create the issue as far as I can tell.

1: activate a non full screen VFB interactive render
2: use DOF on your camera
3: adjust render region (to adjust the focus point)
                    4: stop the interactive render
5: hit render for your production shot
6: freeze on building light cache

                    Happens every time

I hope this is helpful and any new info would be awesome, this is a real pain

                    Cheers,

                    David

Works fine on my end. Could you attach the scene where this is happening? Also, which V-Ray version build do you have installed?

Is there any update here? Were currently building out some GPU scenes from previous CPU scenes and im running into this same error.

I don't think a scene was ever sent. Could you send one?

The solution I have found that keeps me working is to turn off "show calculation" on the light cache and set your light cache from "Still" to "animation" This 100% eliminated the issue. I miss seeing the light cache but hey, it works for me and my 3 other artists.
