  • Lights in water causing blocks of noise

Trying to render a swimming pool shot, stripped it right back to try and find out the issue - but it seems just having the lights in the water causes these blocks of noise to appear that take an age to clear up or not at all. Attached a screenshot showing the basic scene. I can send this if needed.

Turning the light eval to "full" makes it even worse.

Is there a workaround for this?

Hi can you simplify the scene as much as possible and post it together with all assets used in it here or send it through our support contact form.
If you decide to use the contact form please include a link to this thread in the description.

Bit of an odd scene if you don't mind me saying so...lots of mad geometry which maybe wasn't helping and likely isn't anything that you built, as it's Rhino stuff...coplanars and flipped stuff.
I had to delete it for my sanity
I switched to cms which seemed appropriate, rebuilt the pool very simply and re-did the lights just to be sure. Appears to work fine now.

Yes not my geo - all Rhino crap unfortunately

So you reckon it could be the geometry?
I'll give it a go with fresh polys

I don't think it's all the geometry, but it surely didn't help.
I reckon it's maybe some combination of stuff which got tricky to assess, so
as rebuilding it seemed to cure it I just stopped there
Swapping to cms was my first inclination but it'd be worth testing further.
I can't atm as I have an annoying client to wrangle
Maybe someone else can delve deeper.

Yes I was seeing those but not after the rebuild iirc. Did you replace the lights?

Sorry, it was late when I did this and so I just looked again.
I think I just got lucky, as something is definitely not right.
CPU renders it ok but GPU is borked for sure.
I thought it might be the light cache but BF is equally awful.
Even with no water it screws up badly.
                    One for the devs unltimately

Hi I tested the scene with V-Ray 6 and there is no noise.

There is however a missing map in your scene under the name concrete-46_d100sqhenlety.jpg
It is part of the pool walls shader. It could be important.

Have you tried to upgrade to the latest version of V-Ray 5? What is the full version of V-Ray that you are using so I can test with the same build.
What is your video driver version? What video card are you using?

Thanks, the map is not relevant no, as it happens with a total rebuild geo and white material. Also attached a snip from the full scene which has no missing textures etc.

It looks like it only gets bad when at certain angles.
These two are production at .005 noise and both have rectangular areas that don't resolve.
This is the simplest geometry and flat shaders.
At random different angles it seems ok.
Here I'm on Max 23, Vray latest, rec. driver. 2080ti
