  • Stopping a render

There needs to be a workaround for stopping a GPU render. I can't wait 15 minutes every time I hit stop/cancel. How is killing MAX and launching it again the way people are doing it? I literally forget why I even canceled the render in the first place because it takes so long. If you didn't save before you hit render and have to cancel, you lose work. There has to be a solution.

We have a fix in internal builds, usually it happens with exterior scenes and many instances.
If there is a chance to share a sample scene to test the fix, it will be very helpful. This change could be ported to stable, I will check with the devs

I timed it on a stopwatch this morning - 14 minutes and 32 seconds! I will wrap this up and send it over as soon as I can.

Is there a fix for the nightlies? I am uploading the files now and will share them when they are done uploading. I can't function when I have to wait 15 minutes every time I stop a render.

I tested your scene with the fix, it works nicely! stopping the render takes less than 10 seconds
The increased system memory usage is about the render elements you have in the scene, you have a lot of render elements. We will investigate and see what is causing issues
For the time being, use the CUDA engine and try to use the least amount of render elements in your scene. The scene is workable in IPR with the current stable build
One more tip, for interactive rendering swap GI to BF. It works much better on GPU. See my post on using interactive rendering here

I added your scene to our tests, it is very helpful. Thanks again!

I have spent a few hours testing your scene with our fix, it seems that the rendering performance is a lot better as well in the new build, not just time to first pixel or start/stop rendering. Would you be interested in trying this build on you machine?
If you have any similar exterior scenes with forest pack instances that are slow to first pixel, it will help our team to test/debug
                  Thanks!

There is another improvement to your scene, about time to first pixel. It is now 88.92 seconds compared to 130 seconds in stable builds, and less than 10 seconds to stop interactive rendering
This scene is very helpful to us, we are looking into other improvements to make it render faster
I should have a new build ready soon, if you have time to experiment
