  • Very long Vray GPU render time and errors that may abort the render: [GPU light cache] Could not allocate buffer of size 1918MB! Error : [OOCRenderThread::launchKernel] 2: Kernel launch failed

    Hi all!

I've been experiencing difficulties with render efficiency and constant warning/error messages, and the Vray GPU render time is taking way more longer than expected. I would really appreciate any help for the error messages and faster gpu render since I am making animation.
    Here are my pc specs:
    • Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-14900K, 3200 Mhz, 24 Core(s), 32 Logical Processor(s)
    • Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 32.0 GB
    • Available Physical Memory 20.1 GB (I noticed that this drops to 7GB after I opened the max file)
    • Available Virtual Memory 34.3 GB
    • Graphic Card: NVDIA RTX 4000 Ada
    I am using Vray GPU 6, updated 2.1 and 3dsmax 2025.

My renders are 1920x1080 frames 24fps with the attached render set up, and each frame is now taking up to 30 minutes. The scene includes chaos scattered plants, one sun light, and a few noise modifier to simulate tree movement, which I thought wouldn't be too demanding?

I have attempted to adjust the render setting but sometimes the render would crash with warning [GPU light cache] Could not allocate buffer of size 1918MB! Error : [OOCRenderThread::launchKernel] 2: Kernel launch failed, this simply would not let me render anything. As a result I didn't figure anything out as the file just crashed when I modified my setting.
When it crashed I noticed my pc memory skyrocketed to nearly 100% but not sure why.

I have tried the vraybenchmark test for my gpu, and the score is 2296 with CUDA 556.12

Please help There is no way I would be able to render all the frames to make it in time if its taking that long

    Thanks a lot
    Eva

This is my pc performance after just opening up the max file, this might be the reason I am running out of memory when I render?

      Hi, eva_huang
Committed 54.2 gb RAM, without the first starting the render.
You need to use a lower texture resolution. Use tools such as SplineDynamics - Proxy textures or Pixamoon - Bitmap resizing or similar. This will unload RAM and VRAM. Use resize in %, this is more correct.

Hi, thanks for posting. How much video memory do you have? What is your GPU utilization during rendering? Here is an article explaining how to monitor your GPU performance..
