  • HELP! RT/GPU Crashing after Update to 3.x

    Heya Folks,

    I just installed 3.x over 2.x - Max 2014...

License server seems to running fine. Production renderer is working fine.

BUT...RT/GPU will crash every time I run it. I am running two GTX580s and have not changed the drivers. All worked fine before. RT/CPU seems to be OK.

It's hard to see, but the error in the command line seems to say: CUDA error 400 : A resource handle passed to the API call was not valid.

Tried rebooting, clean Max reset, etc., etc...

    Any ideas?

Also, does the license server run automatically now or something? When I re-boot the machine and try to run it (as I normally do) it returns an error saying another instance is already running. Seems weird.

Gotta get to work so I hope someone can help. I have emailed Chaos Group support but nothing yet so Vlado if you are around I'd really appreciate it...

    Thanks,

    -Alan

So which driver version do you have installed now?

    Best regards,

Oops! Better make that 311.06 - I just checked and the registered version did mot match my last install file. I must have done it on-line...

        Thanks,

          Can you try version 344?

          Best regards,

Also, is that on any scene?

            Best regards,

Yes, I've tried a few scenes...simple and complex. I'll try the new driver...

              Thanks!

Well, RT/GPU is now working with the 344.11 drivers. But rendering seems quite sluggish. Using Vray 2.x and the older drivers with the same two 580s, I used to do the benchmark in 1:29. Now it has slowed down to 1:43.7. Pretty disappointing especially considering I was hoping for a bit of GPU speed-up in v3 (which I thought I did notice during the v3 beta using the older drivers).

Any thoughts as to what might wrong? Why was I able to run the V3 beta with the older drivers but cannot now?

                I'll keep testing...

Also, apparently the new License Server installs as a Service, Correct? Does it have to be installed as a service? I kinda liked it as something I could keep track of visually in the tray...

                Thanks,

                -Alan

Well, remember how adding more features makes the GPU code slower? You can see it here first hand. With that said, there are some speed improvements in the nightly builds; I can get you a build for testing if you like.

The license server would install as a service only if you set that option during the install. You can certainly remove the service and run it manually.

                  Best regards,
                  Vlado

Yes...I do remember...and sure, it all makes sense. If you could give me access to the nightly builds (if that is what you are referring to) it would be great and I don't why I haven't asked until now - just busy I guess - but yeah, I'd love to do some testing for GPU speed.

And also, we have Light Cache in RT now so that's bound to help out speed-wise....

Hmmm...I guess the installer was set up to install the License Server as a Service. I'll re-install and change that...

                    Thanks for everything Vlado!
