  • Env light working differently in viewport than in vfb

So here's an odd one. I have a scene in 3dsmax that contains a sphere, a vray camera and a dome vray light with a VrayHDRI map assigned to the texture slot. When I turn on the Activeshade in the viewport, I get image #1 below, which is totally wrong.

I close the activeshade viewport. Then when I change the renderer to "Active Shade Mode" in the Render Setup Floater and hit render, it render image #2 below in the vfb, which is the correct result.

Then I turn the active shade viewport back on, and now it renders correctly too (image 3)

Any idea what might be happening?

    Hi Neil,

I'm not able to reproduce it in my tests. What is the exact V-Ray/3DS Max version? Can you post the scene file to check the entire setup?

        Thank you Neil,

Got the same result with your scene file here. There is something strange, because I'm not able to reproduce it on a completely new scene setup even with the exactly the same objects and V-Ray settings. Furthermore the Active Shade (RT) works fine in all viewports (front, left, top) except the lower right perspective (camera) one.

Have you made any specific adjustments to this viewport? The viewport Active shade renderer seems to use different camera type.

The reason for this wrong active shade render is the locked view.

I will send a bug report to our devs.

Thanks for figuring this out. So is it that the view being locked means vrayRT is giving the wrong camera information to the viewport?

Actually it is difficult to say exactly what is happening because I can't export a .vrscene file for this setup and find which camera or view is used.
However, our developers will take care of it.

Cool. I did some more poking and it seems that just turning on that lock messes everything up, turning if off makes everything work. So maybe turning on the lock just negates the entire scene. Anyways, glad it'll get fixed, locking viewports is a very common thing to do. Thanks for the help!

Yes, this is exactly what is happening when the current render is V-Ray Adv. If you change the render mode to Active shade, then it will work fine again even with locked view.
