  • Slow to Swap

I want to start using RT. However, it seems to be very finicky. First, I was told to use it in production mode, is this correct? The problem is, when I go back to V-Ray Adv in production, I lose my settings. Also, it takes up to 30 seconds to swap back and forth, which is painfully slow. What am I doing wrong?

Going back and forth between Production and Active Shade in Max2016 and later is slow, but it is not because of V-Ray (it is slow without having V-Ray installed as well). There is a fix - if you go into "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2016\stdplugs" and delete the SpectrumRenderer.dlr from there it will start changing those quickly. Keep in mind that doing that is on your responsibility, not official and there are no warranties or something, but it worked for me (you can just move it somewhere instead of deleting it).

You can use the RT in production or in active shade. Using it in active shade gives you the possibility to change stuff in the scene - lights, materials, geometry, whatever and see the changes immediately without having to restart the render. Using it in production gives you the option to use Light Cache. Make sure to check the (really short) FAQ (it can save you a lot of troubles).

Great! I have been putting off using it for awhile. I have tried twice today, in production, and it sites on Exporting at 0% and does nothing. I am going back to Activeshade. All I need to do is line up some lighting to match previous setup. Thanks for the help!

If it says exporting better to wait for it to export. How long does it take ? There should be a progress bar at the bottom.

The progress bar doesn't seem to move at all. I have waited 5 minutes and it hasn't moved off 0%. I have tried both production and ActiveShade and both do the same, which is nothing.

This sounds like a bug, but it will be hard to tell what is going on (could be related to 3rd party plugins or something else). Is it possible to share the scene (private mail to me or support, we can give ftp access for upload if this is going to be easier for you) ?

Sure, that would be great. I can gather it and email you a link.

                Hello,

By the way - does this happen (export staying at 0% long time) on a simple scene (like a teapot and a light) with RT CPU in Active Shade? Normally it should last 2-3s the first time you start an export because it needs to load the various V-Ray plugins for rendering. After the first time it should be immediate.

If you are trying RT GPU - the first time will take a bit longer (~20s) but there should be messages and progress moving beyond 0% too.

                Best regards,
                Yavor

It's a pretty large scene, but I have all the heavy stuff turned off. I was just trying to set up my lighting.

And if you try a fresh new simple scene - does it still stay at 0% ?

As I know bobby's scene, he works with millions on objs so the time to parse the scene to the GPU doesn't surprise me.
Bobby, is it also doing it with a simple teapot and a plane in a fresh scene?
If not, then I'm 99% sure it's the way your scene is set up
If you'd like, drop me a PM with your scene link and I'll have a look

It will help a lot if we can check the scene by ourselves as well ...

I'll check on a simple scene. I am starting one now. The previous one, the one I was having the problem with was large, but most things were hidden.

Well, if you get a chance to zip your scene, send it to Blago and myself if you can, I'll be glad to have a look and see why it take so much time
