all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

hey guys i would love for everyone to just contribute to this thread, its very difficult to set up scenes to render without all the info that the user manual purposely left out, everyone can now post all they know about every setting here!! thanks

Re: all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

thats a good idea! a thread about settings, there are many parameters on vray options that i still dont understand.

I use the universal settings it give me great results but for every scene that i want to render i adjust the settings and something very important its the light sources on your design, windows and sometimes i used rectangulars lights.

Re: all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

The link below takes you to the online guide for V-Ray for 3D Studio Max.

This guide is far more extensive than the V-Ray for SketchUp guide and covers a good 85% of the V-Ray Options settings in great detail. (Such as the effects of different antialiasing settings in the Image Sampler, ozone settings, rendering engines, dmc samplers, etc)

The terminology is exactly the same, so it shouldn’t be too hard to translate it to the SketchUp interface, although VfMax still has some features not yet available on VfSU.

Re: all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

i have all those tutorials and more, u kno what i would love to see, an actual video of someone rendering a good interior and exterior, furniture and all, until it gets near realism, showing all the steps and explaining in sketchup, as they go along

Re: all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

That might be easier said than done. There are so many different conceptions of a “realistic” rendering that one tuturial would not be able to satisfy everyone’s needs.

The best thing to do for now is to try to get acquainted with how major parameters in the V-Ray Options affect the final render.

I personally found the 3D Studio Max guide very helpful, especially the tutorials in the Examples section, since all of them have tons of images showing how tweaking a setting changes the scene. The VRaySun tutorial there made me understand how to tweak the sun and sky settings to my liking. And the Image Sampler tutorial introduced me to antialiasing filters, which really helped me bring out the details of small intricate pieces in my scenes.

There’s also some good tutorials in the Tips & Tricks forum.

Re: all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

I also put up my hand in request for this, the 3ds max tutorials explain the concepts nicely but it would still be nice to have more dedicated videos and a well contained manual for software which comes with this price tag.

Re: all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

ok, very nice, i will check all these out, i have so many tutorials but none give me what i want, they explain the main settings but its still not as real as what i see online, u know what ama start posting some renders and see what comments i get on how to improve my renders. i thinks thats best. and only core 1.49.84 core renders fast enough for me, the newer versions are so slow, cant believe it. i took a test of the latest version and the parsing time is like 10 minutes for simple scenes but ama post all from now on, i think thats best. thanks to everyone here. i find this forum the most helpfull forum online.

What? The latest version takes longer to render? Are you sure? 1.49.84 doesn’t exist, so I don’t know what the “old” version was that you were using… The latest version of V-Ray for SketchUp is 1.48.66, and I haven’t heard anyone complain that it’s slower… are you sure that you had it set up properly, or that you had the right version?

Re: all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

The latest version of V-Ray for SketchUp is 1.48.66, and I haven’t heard anyone complain that it’s slower…

I have noticed that the latest version is a lot slower if some of my textures have alpha transparency, but that was reported as a bug, so hopefully that’ll be fixed in the upcoming patch.

But other than that, it’s a lot faster than the older version. There’s virtually no parsing time anymore.

Re: all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

The parsing times cut down to half, but it’s still far from no parsing time at all.
Average scene that takes 3 min parsing with 1.05 and minute and a half with 1.48

I guess I should have specified that I haven’t really done any high-end rendering with the newest version yet because of all of the bugs. I think my largest file size I’ve rendered was about 4-5MB. And in those instances the parsing time was 10 seconds at most, while it would take at least 30 seconds on the older version.

Re: all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

Imo today still the biggest down side of vfs is the parsing time. Of course I know that asgvis doing everything they can to fix this in the limits of SU’s abilities.

Re: all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

He’s refering to the core version - of V-Ray itself. The one that appear when you add the render time in the VFB. The very first version had that number I believe.

Re: all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

oh the number that means absolutely nothing, and shouldn’t even ever be mentioned or available as a feature because it’s misleading and pointless? Good.

Re: all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

trust me you guys the fastest version for me has been 1.49.84. i think thats the core, dnt have my laptop on me. 1.05.30 and the latest versions render ok wen u have a very small modell but it takes forever wen u have a good size model. but the old version for sketchup 6 has no problems. doesnt even take more than 10 seconds to start working. i have another post on this forum i need help with but am trying to arrange all my settings so i can post it. but out of curiosity, what operating systems are you guys using? am using windows 7 ultimate and a acer 4420 duAL CORE LAPTOP

Re: all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

the very first version? how many versions for sketchup have there been since that core? when did it come out? i have been reading posts from 2007 on this forum and i see some great renders using that core on the forum. i think it works ok but idk. i love the quality and new addition of options to the new versions but cant seem to get my work done on time using them. what do all you guys think?

Re: all vray for sketchup settings eplained in one thread

You have the very first version. I did not say any version number.

Then you had the first service release - 1.00.74 - version number in the About section of the Options Window
Then you had the second service release - 1.05.03 - version number in the About section of the Options Window

Then you have the last release, which was a rewrite to add OSX support: 1.48.66 - Version number is in the Extension list of SU when you select the item say “V-Ray for Sketchup”
