So we’ve completed Phase II of this project, and added Flight Attendants, food, and upgraded the speed of the interface a bit. This time we also upgraded the camera for the green screen work to a Sony HDW-F900R, and had the footage cleaned by the HK company Medfond. Compositing and rendering was still done here.
One bug we have discovered with the site (and using papervison) appears to be that on a 64bit computer using 32bit internet explorer, flash wants to cache the whole site before allowing you to interact…this doesn’t happen in firefox or opera…annoying…
A few of us at TEAGUE just finished a project with the Advertising firm McCann Erickson (Hong Kong), creating a microsite for Cathay Pacific Airlines.
Our portion of the project included the model assembly, texture, lighting and rendering of the Cathay 777 interior, along with keying and compositing the green screen footage into the animations. We also researched the somewhat unique solution of using flash and papervision to walk through the entire aircraft.
McCann did some futher post work on the imagery, built and programed the site. (Well done guys!)
We use 3ds max 9, render with Vray, and composite in Combustion.

Nice stills. First class looks sweet, not that ill ever travel in it. As for the website, it could possibly be my connection but the site takes so long to load up, I tried to take the tour of first class but just closed it after a couple of minutes cause it was stop/starting too much.
Thanks for the feedback about the website…I do think it is a very ambitious amount of data to push. Load times are pretty quick here, and the point release of flash 9 seems to help a bit too…
very nicely done. it looks great. can you give some more insight into the process of making in interactive? walking around the cabin is pretty fun…like a vray video game
I had a theory that you could place a camera in the center of a sphere, and use the 360 cam in vray to make an animation play on the sphere. You (the camera) stay at 0,0…and the animation plays around you, making for a sort of moving flash VR. (you can do the same thing in max, although the viewport resolution sucks)
I’ve seen the idea accomplished in different ways, but not without pluggins…other than flash~
Dude this is insane! A panoramic walk through! Never knew it could be done! I’ll have to check out this papervision, I guess it has something to do with that.
Yep, papervision is an actionscript for Flash. As Eric mentioned, it’s essentially a flash movie playing on a 3d sphere, with a camera inside. One of our coworkers got a mockup of it working that we submitted to the client (McCann-Erickson) and then they went nuts coding it to work online. Given the size of the individual frames from the animation (2000 X 1000) and the number of frames (1200!) I’m still surprised they were able to get it looking as good as they did and loading as fast as it does.

Great stuff - I have checked out that site and it is really bad? The idea is awesome but it just doesn’t work. I tried it on 3 different computers at different locations. I don’t know whether the lag is just so long that I cannot wait and start pressing all the buttons or what, but it is pretty frustrating to watch and not be able to control.
Has anyone had any luck with running this and being able to control the view etc?
It’s been a bit off and on for me as well…I know that the very latest Flash 9 upgrade solves some pretty major issues with performance- perhaps this would help you.
Also, I’ve noticed it takes a bit for the navigation to start working well…which is a bit annoying.
Still, the site exceeds a lot of my expectations from the results we had early on…
Nope - still unusable! I had upgraded to the Flash 9 player. It seems to work a bit for an instant or so and then just spins out of control and locks up. It says it is running in the task manager but all buttons are frozen and moving the mouse around doesn’t do anything. I have tried it on 4 machines in 2 different ISPs on machines with high end video cards and loads of RAM and CPU power.
Wow - is that frustrating. Seems like the plane is going down! lol
Not sure what the fix is, or why I’m having this problem?? I guess it could be slowdown from my ISP but have tried it at work and at home, both ISPs I have never had any problems with other sites. Oh well. Really nice images anyway.
Yeah… I’m having some pretty serious issues when running it in Internet Explorer, and it sounds just like what you’re experiencing. You sort of walk back and forth, the view randomly rotates and is not at all tied to the mouse position. Sometimes the browser is completely locked up, but definitely none of the navigation controls work.
It runs great in Firefox and Opera, so I’m not sure what the issue is. This is the first time I’ve opened up Internet Explorer in months! We’ll have to let the developers know.
