Chaos Corona 16 for 3ds Max - Previews (Daily Builds) Discussion

@short_cirkuit Claude says that V-Ray and Forest are the suspects. Have you tried rendering without them?

But, as Aram said, the best best course of action would be sending us full details and a minidump here: https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

hey guys, the moment passed, it was an error log i got out of RENDERFLOW as i said, not Corona. So i extracted what i could at the time and i was asking Claude about it. I Do realise its not ideal, but i dont have those logs. unless i can search my pc to try and find them? maybe direct me to where and how i can find it?

if it crashed while rendering in Max only, there should be a minidump automatically stored, given there was crash report, not a straight close to desktop.
They are usually stored (depending on version, but for Max 2026 it is) somewhere at:

%localappdata%\Autodesk\CER\<some_number>

folder.
You can sort my date or date modified and find the latest minidump there - it should be named 3dsmax_minidump.dmp.zip or so.

Hope this helps.

@short_cirkuit I have set up a support ticket #511124 for you. Let’s continue over there and update this thread once we have some findings.

Hi

Im testing the new Background Layer and I have some notes that it will be really great if you could improve.

1 Now that we have more and more Layers in VFB its difficult to see them when Corona VFB adjust automatically its size to the image vertical size, giving the impression that there are no more Options in VFB, could we have a way to disable layers we dont use? or perhaps change its order? I never use Chromatic Aberration nor Denoising, Proportion Guides in VFB doesnt make sense to me, you need to render in order to use it (I have requested a Proportion Guides in the Camera while ago where I dont need to render anything, having the guides in viewport I could manage to improve my composition, I know there are many scripts but… cmon, having it in VFB you need to be wating to render and moving camera over and over again,)

2 When Background Layer is activated, theres a message about turning on Direct Visibility Override to avoid artifacts, thats great, but this only works for exteriors, what about interiors when you have glass for windows, in that case Direct visibility doesnt do anything, you need to enable Refraction Overrride, (I have made a request about making Direct visibility more versatile, where you can affect everything without worring if youre in an exterior or interior or when you need to even use Reflection override) so it would be nice to add a message about it too.

3 It would be really nice if background layer could have options for editing the image, I know you dont intend to do it like Vray which VFB works basically as a mini Photoshop but at least an exposure, saturation controls would be cool.

4 Again comparing to Vray background layer, please add it to affect reflections and refractions too.

Hi, your feedback is logged in our system.

Parallax displacement/bump its an excelent addition, thanks!!!

hey guys, latest daily on a previous scene, crashes when i launch IR and when i press render, it doesnt do anything (black screen but doesnt crash). i also tried resetting corona settings to default

@short_cirkuit can you please share a sample scene here or at https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new ?

Did you try to adjust parallax bump scale? I find that between default and max value there’s virtually no difference.

Also i think that parallax kills way too much specular lighting. That’s especially noticeable when viewing against bright light source.

One more thing - it seems that parallax doesn’t play nice with randomizer. When texture rotation is randomized you can see shading inconsistencies, similar to what you get when you randomize normal map incorrectly.

We have been discussing internally a case which is very similar to your result above.
The issue turned out to be in the texture itself - normal was is slightly tilted (green channel averages not at 127.5) so rotating it causes those differences.

Please send a scene over so we can investigate it further.
