One point of clarification for me: On Global DMC, the value is set at 1.0, but greyed out. Is that to say that since it’s (apparently) turned off, that it’s really 0 and on the automatic setting? Or must I activate Use local subdivs and physically set it to 0?

If use local subdivs isn’t turned on, vray ignores pretty much any dmc setting and just applies the shade rate. That 1.0 “subdivs mult” is an overall up and down control for every subdiv setting in your scene but again only if you’ve got “use local subdivs” turned on, otherwise it does nothing. Edi…

If an interior scene was lit by sun+sky only , now would there be any benefit in putting the vray sky in a dome light instead in the environment slot thus removing the need of any portal lights?

I always do that, but in fact it may well be useless for the VRay Sky. Because it’s procedurally generated, and the brightest part is always by the sun disk, I’d assume “importance sampling” is automatic, in this case. I have *not* tested the difference though, specifically. I can’t recall it beh…

Aaand i was wrong. Putting the sky into a domelight WILL help AND render quicker. Soon it won’t matter as importance sampling will be performed directly on the texture into the background slot, so do not go to town with automation scripts just yet…
