City rendered in Vray

http://www.3dluvr.com/ruairi/vray\_renders/city\_mblur\_hdrez%20copy.jpg

working on a pretty big scene in Vray for my short film.

currently just under 5 million polys, with GI, motion blur and a small amount of Depth of field. I’m liking Vray

wow great work! looks very nice. what was the rendertime at that rez? and id like to see it before post if possible.

That’s gorgeous! It must have taken a while to model all those buildings. Care to share some modeling tips?

oh boy  ,
looks great, lots of work (and patience), whats your output render size?

Tom

hey, nice image!
just been having a look on your site at your previous stuff…

pretty awesome!!!

NIIIIIIICE! Really stunning. I’d be interested to see some wireframes - looks like a pretty heavy scene.

Excuse me for asking, but are you Ruairi “Fifty Percent Grey” Robinson, of Oscar nominated fame? If so, that would explain a lot.

That’s at final output rez but with a 2.35:1 crop. 1920x1080 is full HD rez.

that was 3 hours because I pressed some silly buttons, but realistically, should render in about an hour a frame for the same quality at HD rez as earlier tests were. There are no post effects done to it whatsover, this is straight outta the renderer.

There’s actually only a few building models in there (and I didn’t model 'em all myself - got a bit of help there) but one building can be 5 if you instance and rotate it… every single building has the same texture, which is a 3k rez plate of semi-randomised chunks of detail. It’s pretty cool that you cant see any tiling anywhere eheh

yes it is.

Wow nice!!!
I’m planning a huge futuristic City for years now. Hopefully i will have the time to build it some day. Your’s is looking amazing… a bit rotten though.
So you’re working on a new Shortfilm? I loved “50% grey”. One of my All-Time-Favorites! I have to say my Torero is inspired by it too. (more something like 50% pink though… ;)) This city now looks fairly complex, a good test of Vray’s Power indeed. I’m really interested what you’re cooking up there. Do you have an idea when this peace will be finished?

Keep up the good work - great we have you here!

PS: Ah btw… i love the HDTV Aspect Ratio…

Are you using proxy objects?

Cheers

I’ve actually had to put the short film on hold for almost 6 months now because I’ve been directing a bunch of commercials - but am taking a slight breather from that just for about a week, going to NYC for a holiday. Just though I’d see if I could get the city to render finally before I left, it’s been sitting there for a few months now untouched. Every time I tried to render before I just got unhandled exception errors. So anyway it’s working now

It’s a live action film btw, not animated this time. But there are some CG environments… I was lucky enough to get Cillian Murphy, from 28 days later and the upcoming Batman Begins (he plays the scarecrow) to act in it… in a way the delay aint a bad thing because by the time I’m finished, he’ll have a much higher profile

so should be done sometime … I dunno, next six months. Yeesh.

not using proxy objects… yet.

But once I reach 6 million polys again I’m sure I’ll have to. Earlier versions had more polys and refused to render point blank. I stripped it back a little though and got rid of some stuff you’ll never see… Whats amazing is that I have a geforce 6800 GT (I think) and I can fly around the 6 million poly city totally realtime at about 25 fps, but I couldnt even render the thing! Those graphics cards are unbelievable - I had no idea it was so good before I bought it… thoroughly recommended (esp. in directX)

It’s great to see your latest work posted here. Your previous animated shorts are fantastic - I remember seeing “Fifty Percent Grey” for the first time at LEAF when you received your award, and it blew me away!

Keep us posted with developments in this new project.

Have you used VRay much in your commercial work? I see there’s quite a bit of CG work in there.

Great job Ruairi.

Ah, i have to ask one thing.
How did you make the Fog in the Background?
Looks kind of volumetric (and very cool) to me.
