I’m working on a new toy that I will have rapid prototyped and then cast into resin toys, and I am using Vray to test the various colorways I want to be doing. One of them is a clearn resin/plastic like the picture below, often used in Japanese toys:
Does anyone have any tips on how to create a shader like this? What’s the best place to start? SSS materials?
Any help would be highly appreciated
weeeell, it’s not too bad, but it doesn’t quite seem like a plastic toy…
The japanese toys are rotocasted, so they consist of a 3-5 mm thick skin making the toy hollow. Both my 3d model and the actual 3d print will have a massive core. So obviously it’s hard to get the same effect from the start when there are these sort of differences…
To get the same kind of light falloff in the material, you really need to model it like a shell, and then use some glossy refraction and fog in VRayMtl to get that effect.
Yeah that was what I was thinking too, modelling-wise…
The actual physical model of the toy will have a massive core, so I’m better off trying to simulate that look in Vray instead. I’ll throw some fog and glossy refraction on it though.

yeah, well, the thing is, the toy will actually not be a shell when I make it in real life, so it’s not necessary to model it like that for me. I’ll just be doing test-renders with the shader you made. thanks for the help bazuka!
