Clipping Planes in V-Ray camera

I was just thinking it would be nice if the clipping planes in the VrayPhysicalCamera worked in renders.
If they could take everything behind clipping plane as invisible, but still use normal geometry for light calculations.
Would be great for some interior views or sections with complex geometry where it’s hard to slice through many objects.

(+ would be cool if v-ray sketchup could ‘read’ section planes as geometry cuts…)

Not sure what you mean - the physical camera clipping planes work in exactly this way?

Quite a few years ago I *think* we had an issue whereby an interior vraycamera (using clipping) was allowing light from a HDR or the vraysky to come into the room. It could have been a bad dream, but certainly vray clipping doesn’t do that now.

Sounds to me like you’re describing exactly what the clipping planes in the physical cam already do?

Not sure if this is related, but the VrayCam clipping planes do not work correctly when combined with vertical shift camera correction. Clipped geometry is not visible in the viewport, but still renders if the clipping planes are too close. The image below shows a simple example. Anyone else had this issue?

Switch off camera correction and that’s how the clipping planes are - they’ve never worked with any kind of camera correction. If you desperately need to work around it, keep the camera horizontal, add height to the image you’re rendering until you see enough at the top and stick to rendering crops.

I appreciate the response. I’ve never struggled to work around this issue, just saying it would be great to have one less workaround in the workflow. :wink:

Yes, V-Ray physical camera clipping plane doesn’t respect the camera shift correction.
This is a know issue, which is reported to the developers already.

That was quick. Added to v-ray before I even put it on wishlist :wink:
I should have investigated more. The issue I had on that scene might have been to do with some vertical shift correction applied.
Handy to get some of those tight interior shots without going too wide with camera lens, and getting wide angle perspective distortion.
I animated the geometry for that view, but good to know it can be achieved through the camera clipping plane.

Yes I’ve come across this issue on a few occasions and it’d be great to have it solved.

There is a VrayClipper in the 3.0 version which could be useful in such situations.

This is even better than what I was expecting ! Although it would be complementary to a congruent clipping plane in the vrayCam

Why is this one so complicated? Not bitching just asking out of curiousity? It’s a plane, it’s aligned somehow, why not just change it to align to whatever is needed in this case the projection plane?

Because, at the place where the clipping is done, I don’t know if the camera has shift or not and what it is… so it’s a bit complicated. We’ll get to it soon enough, I hope.

Has the camera clipping plane been fixed yet for vertical shift? Would it be possible to decouple the clipping with near & far? Typically I only need near clipping, while the far clipping clips my HDRI dome lit background.

Same problem here, the clipping of the DOME is quite annoying when you only need the near clip.
