Corona scene converter and ArchiCad

Corona scene converter and ArchiCad:

If i try to convert a scene saved from ArchiCad, the conversion to corona bitmaps is not working. After the conversion to corona bitmaps the material editor shows no texture (only black) and says “not a png file”.

If i click on the texture (png file) in the Project asset inspector, it shows correctly.

If i start the scene converter again, it converts the corona bitmaps back to cinema bitmaps and shows the archicad png textures correctly again.

So i have to stay with cinema bitmaps, that is working fine.

This problem exists a long time. Now i am testing corona 16, Mac Studio M2 max, OS Tahoe. Still not working

Hi, how exactly are you opening an Archicad scene in Cinema 4D? I would like to understand the process.

Hi Maru

In ArchiCad’s “Photorealistic settings” i can choose “export to C4D” , it then saves the content of my scene in the 3D-window as C4D file with all used textures as png’s in a texture folder. Cinama4D opens it with no problems, all materials and textures from ArchiCad are visible. Scene Converter also works fine, only the conversion into coronabitmaps fails and shows all bitmaps black and says “not a png file”

So I always have to uncheck to convert “cinema bitmaps” in the converter to get working corona materials with visible textures.

Thanks, and sorry for the delay!

The issue is caused by the way the Archicad exporter works. Regardless of the original format of the bitmap textures used in Archicad (.tif, .jpg,…) it always saves them with a .png extension. I am attaching a screenshot showing file information of one of the .png textures after the export in ExifToolGUI. As you can see, it’s .png in the filename, but in reality it is a .jpg:

The workarounds are to either:

  1. Rename the resulting texture files to .jpg - they can be loaded into Corona Bitmap then; or
  2. Resave the resulting texture files as “true” .png files - for example using Photoshop

I hope this helps!

Update: this is now reported under the ID (CC4D-1428) in case we can do something about it.

Hi Marcin

Wow thank you for your finding that the problem is on ArchiCad side. I wouldn’t have thought of that. Do you have a suggestion for a tool to rename a lot of file extensions at once. Can Exiftool do that?

Funny that the conversion into cinema materials works even with the wrong extensions.

You’re welcome!

There are many free tools that can do it. For example:

Hopefully we can make Corona Bitmap smarter (or dumber?) so that it would work as well. It’s already acknowledged by the devs.

:joy: i will try to write to the ArchiCad devs to solve this from the other side
